Zoë GIRLING Obituary

GIRLING, Zoë Newmark (née Geffen)
On Monday, June 7, 1999, at home. Zoë, much beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died surrounded by her family. She will be greatly missed by her husband Harry, her children, Oliver, Lucy, Alison and Candida, by her sister Felicia and brother-in-law Sydney Kentridge of London, and also by her children-in-law, Donna Creed, Paul Schabas, Aaron Davis, and her grandchildren Caroline, Laura, Justin and Beatrice D'Angelo; Jacob, Sara and Julia Schabas; Max and Gabriel Davis. Zoë shed her radiance upon a wide circle of relatives and friends, which included colleagues and members of the Arts and Letters Club. She was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1924, the daughter of Max and Irene Geffen. She graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand and Girton College, Cambridge, and taught at the University of the Witwatersrand and at Atkinson College, York University. Zoë's life was in essential ways devoted to appreciating poetry and art. She illuminated the lives of people who responded to her sympathy and insight. Her quite brief illness was eased by the devotion of life-long friends, in South Africa, England, Scotland, Ireland, Israel, the United States and Canada. Her love will stay with us all. ;...there's a special providence in the fall of a sparrow. If it be now, 'tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come; the readiness is all. Good night, sweet Zoë. At the Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Ave. West for service on Wednesday, June 9th at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at 341 Walmer Rd., on Wednesday until 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, after 4:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the Zoë Girling Memorial Fund, The Toronto Public Library Foundation, 789 Yonge St., Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M4W 2G8 - (416) 393-7123 c/o Lisa Fernandez.
