Zoltan Kolley Obituary

ZOLTAN S. KOLLEY April 21, 1923 - June 7, 2021 Zoltan S. Kolley died peacefully at home in Toronto on June 7, 2021 at the age of 98. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Claire (2017). He will be sadly missed by his son Tibor, daughter-in-law Suzanna and granddaughter Kristina, as well as by his sister Emmy Janossy (and family, in Hungary). He was also predeceased by his sister Alice Sass-Kortsak (2009) and was beloved by his nieces Andrea and Christina and nephew Peter, and families. Zoltan was born April 21, 1923 in Budapest. He worked in the family-owned lithography business until 1948 when the company was nationalized by the communist government and he was compelled to escape his native country. He immigrated to Canada and, until his retirement worked in the printing and lithography industry. Upon retirement, he was very proud of his new career as a tree farmer at his beloved 'Wee Creek' property. He loved sports, sailing, skiing, tennis and travel. In his youth he successfully represented Hungary in international yacht races. He continued to play tennis, at the Mulmur Hills Racquet Club until well into his eighties. We are very grateful to his devoted caregivers who made it possible for him to live in his home over the past several years. In particular: Alice, Esper, Katherine and Sonia and the PSWs from Better Living Health & Community Services, including Jeanette, Amina, Lokadine and Marcel. The family also wishes to thank Dr. J. Arvanitis and Nurse Dana from the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care for their support and compassion. A memorial mass will be held at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church (432 Sheppard Ave. East) on Wednesday, August 11 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the CNIB would be appreciated.

My husband Bryan and I worked with Zolley at Rust Craft Cards on Midland Ave in Scarborough circa 1970's to 1984. We were in Merchandising, Zolley in Production but his office for a time was in our space so we saw him every day, a tall imposing figure. It was with delight one Monday he stopped at my desk and handed me a book, an ancient text he picked up from a weekend market somewhere. It had my name inscribed, Cathie McCallum, not me, of course, but he thought of me and wondered if I liked to have it. Yes! Very kind, surprising and I hardly thought he ever noticed me or my co-workers in our department. But, cards, books, printed material was our mutual interest, and so, a nice thing to do. Gave me a new perspective on this man who strode about confidently in our midst. Bryan and I extend our sincere condolences to the family for your loss.
