DIANE SCHMIDT Obituary
SCHMIDT, DIANE 1957 – 2021 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Diane Schmidt, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend on December 21, 2021 at the age of 64. Diane was born the youngest of four on June 11, 1957 in Nipawin, SK. She spent many of her younger years on the family farm sharing in chores and grew to be incredibly close with her grandmother who lived only a quarter mile away. Diane often walked to visit her grandma and it was in her grandmother's garden where Diane fostered her well known green thumb. Diane moved to Saskatoon with her mother in grade eight and graduated from Evan Hardy Collegiate. It was at the University of Saskatchewan while studying to become a teacher where Diane met her husband, Evan. Diane convocated in May of 1981 and began teaching Home Economics in Milden, SK until she transferred to Rosetown Central High School. Diane and Evan married on June 26, 1982 in Saskatoon. It was in Milden that she put down roots, raised her family, and built her legacy of kindness, generosity, and love. During her many years in Milden, Diane not only raised her children: Andrea, Lyndon, and Travis, but she also became a fundamental member of the community. She took on many different roles and responsibilities in the community such as: turning a vacant lot downtown into a community garden and caring for the overgrown park after the closure of Milden School, volunteering on the Museum Board and at community hall, calling for Bingo, working at the Milden Golf Course for many years, becoming a Lay Worship Leader for the United Church, and was voted onto the Milden Village Council. Diane loved to travel. She toured Europe with her husband for two months, visited her daughter in Svalbard, took annual ladies trips to Edmonton with her friends, and spent a month in Mexico enjoying the culture, food, and warm weather. She also enjoyed yearly trips to Fairmont, BC with her family where she took them golfing, skiing, white water rafting, hiking, and searching for hidden gems in the wilderness. Diane was artistic and creative. She enjoyed learning to play the Ukulele with her friends, giving performances for surrounding areas, and perfecting her quilt making, often gifting the quilts to others. Diane also enjoyed painting and shared this passion for art with her grandchildren. They were always excited when she would haul her "Grandma bag," overflowing with crafts and art supplies, out of her car. She was always happy to make a crafting, baking, and general mess so long as her grandchildren were with her. Christmas time was always extra special since Diane's Christmas baking was widely anticipated by her friends, family, and community members. Diane was friendly, outgoing, and full of fun. She was loud and silly, with an infectious laugh, kind eyes, and generous heart that will be lovingly remembered. Diane saw the best in everyone and spread messages of love and compassion to make the world a brighter place. Anyone was welcome in Diane's home and in her heart whether they were neighbours, old students, friends of her children, or family. Diane's selfless nature, welcoming demeanor, and fun loving spirit will be missed beyond words or measure. Diane had a brief and brave battle with severe pancreatitis. Her family is grateful to the RUH staff for caring for Diane, offering support, and keeping her comfortable. She is predeceased by her parents, Jack and Bunny Scowen; brother, Rick Scowen; and by her father-in-law, Harvey Schmidt. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Evan; her family: Andrea (Marc) Zimmer and their family, Hudson and Eden; Lyndon (Megan) Schmidt and their family, Lennon, Lincoln and Mila; and Travis (Danielle) Schmidt and their family, Everly and Ezra; two sisters, Janet (Marvin) Skalicky and Patty Mooney (Doug McMyn); three sisters-in-law, Judy Scowen, Heather (Ken) Tuck and Val Schmidt (Larry Turner); her mother-in-law, Lenora Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 2:00 pm at the Milden United Church, Milden, SK. The service will be virtually live-streamed. Please check the Prairie Spirit Pastoral Charge Facebook page for details. Memorial donations may be made to: The Village of Milden, for a town project. Arrangements are in care of the Outlook Funeral Chapel 306-867-8255. __________________________________________________
