Jean Derdall Obituary

DERDALL, Jean
1924 - 2022
Jean Mary Fairall Derdall (Butcher) of Outlook, Sask., passed away peacefully at the OHC-LTC on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at the age of 98 years. Jean was the oldest daughter born to Frank and Helen Butcher of Bratton on May 30, 1924 weighing in at 5 lbs. 1 oz. Seven years later a baby sister Shirley Patricia was born, who passed away August 23, 1980. Jean attended Grades 1-4 at Drennan School-their family moved to another acreage 3 ½ miles south of Bratton where her Dad continued farming. Jean took her schooling up to Grade 10 in Bratton then took her Grade 11 at tech in Saskatoon living with John and Sarah Mauch and working for the Quaker Oats company for 1 ½ years. She then ventured to Vancouver, B.C. working at the Woodwards Department store for 4 years. Jean returned to Saskatoon in April 1947 and married Ancil Derdall September 20, 1947. They settled down to full-time farming on the homestead of Engval & Laura Derdall of Outlook. Ancil & Jean raised 5 sons; Bernard, Reginald, Robert, Raymond, Boyd and one daughter Patricia; all married providing 12 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Jean & Ancil purchased a new home in Outlook in 1967. They continued Ancil's gyrocopter business, farming and opened the Shell gas station which employed the whole family while growing up. They sold their business in 1975 and continued irrigation farming with Bernie and Ray. Jean wore many hats – wife, Mom, Grandma, homemaker, gas jockey, bookkeeper etc. She always had a good meal on the table complete with homemade bread, buns, baking, canned pickles and fruit. Aside from working, Jean enjoyed being a member of the Lutheran Ladies Aide, Royal Purple and a stitchery group. Jean & Ancil loved to dance and to travel – they took many winter vacations to B.C., including trips to Norway, Europe, Arizona, Mexico, Hawaii and Cuba. Ancil passed away January 31, 2004 – Jean later sold her house and moved into the Golden Acres High Rise September 1, 2009 where she lived until she transferred to the OHC-LTC on September 19, 2022. Jean was a very social lady and enjoyed many friendships. She had a tenderness and love for little children who always seemed to migrate to her. Siamese cats also held a special place in her heart. On December 3, 2022 Jean celebrated an early Christmas supper with her children in the LTC activity room, complete with hot turkey and lutefisk supper served on her "Old Country Rose" fine china dishes. Jean was so happy and appreciative of her family, the love and the care she received. Her health took a rapid decline on December 14, 2022 – in her final stage of life she was at peace and content. Jean is survived by 5 sons; Bernie (Lois) of Outlook, Reg (Wanda) of Outlook, Bob (Michelle) of High River, Alta, Ray (Dot) of Outlook, Boyd (Mona) of Outlook, one daughter Patricia Peardon (Jeff McAdam) of Outlook, 12 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and extended relatives. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years Ancil; daughter Patricia Dawn; granddaughter Tanya Derdall; son-in-law Gary Peardon; sister Shirley (Eric) Bartlett and her parents Frank & Helen Butcher. Funeral arrangements were in care of the Outlook Funeral Chapel. The memorial service was held at Sask River Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 4, 2023 with Pastor Roger Haugen officiating. Honourary pallbearers were grandsons Travis Derdall, Cory Peardon, Jordan Derdall, Derek Derdall, Evan Derdall, Ryan Derdall and Carson Derdall; ushers were Warren Larson and Glen Erlandson; the guest register was attended by granddaughters Megan Bobbee and Amanda Souster; the eulogy was delivered by the eldest granddaughter Shantell Marchant and a slide presentation was prepared by Amanda Peardon (grandson Cory's wife). Memorial donations may be made to the Outlook & District Health Foundation. Rest in Peace Dear Mom, Grandma & Friend, 98 years young and Forever Loved.
