The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada announces the death of Sister Ethyle Snetsinger at Mount St. Joseph, Peterborough, on Saturday, September 3, 2022. Sister Ethyle was in her 72nd year of religious life. She was born in Dickinson's Landing ON, on February 9, 1926, one of seven children. Sister Ethyle is lovingly remembered by the Sisters of St. Joseph and she is survived by her brother John and many nieces and nephews. Sister Ethyle is predeceased by her parents Edith Uella (Forsythe) and John Snetsinger, and her brothers Harold, Arnold, Alexander and her sisters Mary and Kathleen. Ethyle entered the Congregation in 1950 and was known as Sister St. Paul. As a teacher she completed eighteen years in educational assignments in Peterborough, Almonte, St. Andrew's West, Cobourg, Hastings, Kirkfield and Honey Harbour. After earning her BA from the University of Ottawa in 1970 Sister continued her teaching career in Vancouver and then in Ottawa at St. Pius X High School for the next ten years. In 1982 Sister Ethyle responded to a missionary call to Labrador, Davis Inlet and Sheshashit, to work with the Oblates and with Innu Community. She worked as accountant-secretary and director of the Naskapi-Montagnais Religious Education Centre which provided adult education, sacrament preparation and catechetical services for the two schools serving the Innu Community. In 1985, following studies in Leadership, Sister worked in Lindsay for five years in the Faith Development Program. After further theological studies in Ottawa, she returned to Peterborough and dedicated her time to proof-reading the Congregational 100-year history book "As the Tree Grows" She was also the Diocesan Cursillo Spiritual Director from 1992-1996. She also worked in the Congregational archives. Since 2011 Sister Ethyle resided in the Care Centre and continued a ministry of prayer. She is remembered for her commitment to education and faith development, as well as her sense of humour and gift of storytelling. A private prayer service will be held at Mount St. Joseph, 1555 Monaghan Road, Peterborough ON, on Thursday, September 8, 6:30 p.m. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Mount St. Joseph Chapel, Peterborough.
