Helen Reesor Obituary

(December 10, 1925 - January 25, 2023)
It is with joy and sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Helen Reesor.
Born and raised in Hamilton, Helen graduated from McMaster University then the University of Toronto in the Class of Meds51. She spent the majority of her life working in Waterloo at her Family Practice and The University of Waterloo Health Services.
Helen was a student of the Bible and believed that Jesus was the son of the living God and hope of mankind. After retiring from her medical career, she was very engaged with Singing Waters Ministries in Orangeville and travelled with the Marney Patterson Invitation to Live team.
We remember her for her intellect, directness, strength, kindness and generosity.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Glyn Edward Reesor, parents John and Hilda Eydt and brother John Norman Eydt. She is survived by her sons, John (Patricia) Reesor and David (Teresa) Reesor, and grandchildren Mark (Heidi), Jenn (David), Chelsea (Nicholas), Laura (Mark), Jacob, Matthew (Angela), Joshua (Sarah), Michaela (Gunnar) and Justin. She was also blessed with great grandchildren Madison, Thane, Berkeley, Charlotte, Violet and Thomas.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the Dods & McNair Funeral Home, Chapel & Reception Centre, 21 First St. Orangeville. Visitation at 1:30 and the Funeral to follow at 2:30. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.dodsandmcnair.com.

Dr. Reesor was our family doctor for the five or so years we lived in Waterloo in the 1960s. She looked after me when I fell, and broke my ankle quite badly on the way home from church at age 13 -in the end I needed surgery and spent several days in the local hospital -all of which she organized.
Unable to attend my 21st birthday party when I wrote and invited her, she very kindly sent me a reflex hammer engraved with my name to put in my U of Toronto medical student black doctor´s bag. Once in practice I kept it safe in the pocket of my white coat and used almost daily, and now still treasure it.
In many ways, she was, indeed, a major role model for me as a full-service family physician, delivering babies and as far as I could see also successfully doing everything else! This at a time when few women were even permitted to enter medical school in Canada [10% admission quota post WW2 in each class and 15% quota in late 1960s].
I have just recently retired after 45 years of following in her footsteps..and adding on besides some more academic pursuits along my way.
My thoughts are with all your family and friends as you celebrate her amazing life and mourn her passing.

John, David and families. Your mom was such a lovely person and certainly a valued member of the Erb St. E. community in Waterloo. She provided impromptu care for my accident prone brother Barrie and my occasional clumsiness. I still have the scar on my palm that she cleaned and mended when I showed up on your doorstep. She had a well-lived life and her legacy lives on with all of you.

Sending condolences to the family. I lived at Batavia Place in Waterloo. Dr. Reesor would always provide care to my Grandma when she would visit from Thunder Bay and attend to our home, if someone was ill after hours. She was kind and a strong lady. She was still practicing on Batavia Place when I left at age 19.

So sorry to read of Dr. Reesor´s passing but grateful for such a long and accomplished life. She was my GP from the time I moved to Waterloo in 1974 until she closed her practice here in the late 1980´s. A wonderful physician and person. My deepest sympathy to her family on the loss of such a remarkable woman. RIP Dr. Reesor.
