John Hunter Obituary

On July 18, 2021, John Hunter unexpectedly passed away while cycling on his regular Sunday group ride. He was a sports enthusiast, avid cyclist, family man, and friend. John was the husband of 37 years to Karen. He was the love of her life. He was a proud and loving dad to Andrew. John was born in Montreal, beloved son of Mary and Gerald Hunter (deceased). John was a caring brother to Anne Tedstone (Lee), uncle to Ryan Tedstone (Amanda) and Rachel Tedstone (Chris). John will be greatly missed by his mother-in-law June. He was very close to and fond of his father-in-law Ron Marwood (deceased). John grew up in Hudson, Quebec. He graduated from both Hudson High School and John Abbott College. Karen and John met in their second year at John Abbott. In 1980 John attended Trent University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1984, Karen and John were married in Toronto. Shortly after they moved to Peterborough, they purchased The Second Cup Coffee Shop in Lansdowne Place Mall, until they sold it in 1999. John was a man with many skills and talents and enjoyed carpentry work. With his father, and father-in-law, John built two homes in Stewart Hall where they lived for many years. He was so proud of the homes they had built and their accomplishments. John and Karen moved into their new home on December 24, 1989. A few months later they were ecstatic welcoming home their son Andrew. After selling the Second Cup John went to work at Classic Sports in the cycling field. Later he opened his own sales agency JR Hunter Sports selling Shimano products until he retired in April of 2020. After retirement John could not stay away from the cycling world. He often worked part time at Wild Rock Outfitters. In his spare time, he put his carpentry skills to good use by building fences, hardwood stairs, porches, for family, friends and others. Many people who knew John would marvel at how fast he could get tasks done. John, as most people would agree only had one speed, whether on his bike, walking or working and that speed was FAST! John would not have wanted it any other way. John was a good husband, father, son and friend, who touched the lives of others with his kindness, humour and silly dad jokes. His memories will be cherished and will live in the hearts of all who knew him. Special thanks to Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, EMS and Police, as well as the staff at Campbellford Hospital who were there to assist John. In lieu of flowers a donation to The Heart and Stroke, The Canadian Cancer Society, or Peterborough Humane Society would be appreciated. Visitation will take place at HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE, 2510 Bensfort Road on Saturday, July 31st from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Face masks and social distancing required. Contact tracing will take place upon arrival.

Hi Karen and Andrew, I was listening to some country songs and thought of my time working for Karen and John at the Second Cup and wondered what they were up to. I was heartbroken to find out that John had passed away.

Everything I read about John is how I remember him. A kind, patient, and FUNNY guy who was one of the nicest people I have met. Oh, and he liked cycling!

I know I´m late, but I want to send condolences and let you know you are in my thoughts these 25 years later.

My best,

Jim Andrews

Words alone cannot fully express the shock and profound sadness I felt upon hearing of the passing of John. It has been over a week and I am still finding it difficult to come to terms with.

I met John in our third year at Trent University 38 years ago. We hit it off immediately which is no surprise since his easy going personality and often dry sense of humour matched mine.

We both decided to start cycling together, he after a long layoff from racing as a junior, and me for the first time since public school. I could never have imagined at that point we would ride 10's of thousands of kilometres together over the years and become close friends.

My deepest condolences go out to Karen, Andrew, and the family!

With Sympathy,

Karen, I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. I remember him from the Second Cup as I worked at The Body Shop in the mall. He had a great sense of humour.

I am so saddened by the news that John has passed. He was a kind, kind man. We would often be present at the same retail events where we would shoot the breeze and share bike stories. My condolences to the family and friends and all who knew this great man.
