John JONES Obituary

It is with great sadness and love that we announce the passing of John Leo Jones at Hospice on Monday, November 21, 2022. John was surrounded by his loving family, his wife and the love of his life, Hilda (Sullivan) of 63 years, "The Jones Girls"; Barb Jones (Moira), Christine Mackey (Pat), Carolyn Douglas (Alan), Maureen Milne (Trent). John was loved and adored by his 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren who were his pride and joy. Christopher Wilson (Meredith), David Wilson, John Wilson (Elly), Kira Mackey (Michael), Brianna Mackey (Zach), Patrick Mackey (deceased), Kevin Douglas (Maria), Greg Douglas (Kirstin), Kathryn Douglas (Matt), Erica Barnes (Jordan), Alex Milne (Matt) and Nicholas Milne and Great Grandchildren Abigail, Dean, Frankie, Chloe and Millie.
John loved spending time with his younger sister Bernadette, deceased brothers Paul (Brigid) and Laverne (Mary) and was raised in Peterborough by his parents, Frances and Bernard Jones.
John was dearly loved by his large extended family including in-laws, Bernice Nolan (James) deceased, Herb Sullivan (Mary) deceased, Allan Sullivan (Donna), Frances Thompson (John), Joanne McAuliffe (Bill)and many nieces and nephews.
John will be dearly missed by his friends including his lifelong fishing buddies, woodcarving, Bridge, Horseshoes, Otonabee Camp group, Curling and Golfing friends.
John shared a knowledge and respect for the great outdoors with his children and grandchildren that they carry with them. His love and passion for our family log cabin built in Kinmount was enjoyed and treasured. As a four-season property, John groomed trails for summer hikes and winter skiing. Always the adventurer, John canoed the Trent Severn lock system, explored every corner of Canada and embraced the culture of the many countries that he travelled to worldwide. He was forever learning and loved gaining new knowledge about people and places.
John studied Geology and graduated with a science degree from St. Francis Xavier in 1958. He received his Education degree from U of T in 1959 and completed his Math Specialist courses at Queen's University.
He taught in Iroquois, Crestwood High School and he retired in 1988 after 19 years as Head of the Math department at St. Peter's Secondary School. He was so respected and loved by his students and fellow teachers who to this day share stories of Mr. Jones' Math classes.
John has always been very active, devoted and committed to his faith. He actively volunteered with the Sisters of St. Joseph after he retired.
He was on the Marycrest Board, the development of Inglewood Seniors Residence and Chair of Financial Advisory Property Committee for many years for St. Joseph's at Fleming. He was involved with the new building of Mount St. Joseph.
We honour John's legacy with these words, "He achieves success who lives well, laughs often, and loves much.... Who leaves the world better than he finds it. who always looks for the best in others and gives them the best he has."
We know those who know him will never forget how he made them feel.
We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Canterbury Gardens, Peterborough Hospice, PRHC, Dr Beamish and Dr Sundar for their amazing care, comfort and kind support that they gave John and all of us on his journey.

I am saddened to learn that life's earthly journey of Mr. John Jones has come to end. Along with Father Clair Hickson and Mr. Paul Delaney, Mr. John Jones taught me Mathematics at St. Peter's High School during the later years I was a student.
In the post High School years, I would occasionally meet up with Mr. Jones at their Reid Road, Kinmount property. Whether at school, the cabin property, or a chance meeting in Peterborough, Mr. John always took the time to chat and ask how things were going. A fine man. A gentleman. I offer my condolences to his entire surviving family during this time of bereavement. A significant loss for all who knew Mr. John Jones.

When I was young, "Uncle John" was my favourite Uncle, even though I discovered later that he technically wasn´t my Uncle.....but was my Dad´s life long best friend. What a beautiful write up for this great mentor! Sincere condolences to "Aunt" Hilda and all my "Cousins" and their families.
