I was John's secretary during much of his tenure at LAO and found him to be a reasonable and companionable boss.
He definitely marched to the beat of his own drummer, but I greatly valued the individuality of his life and lifestyle, as well as his ability to be amused by his own idiosyncrasies.
He comfortably laughed at our shared experiences, like the surprise he gave me the first time I found him taking one of his daily post-lunch power naps in a chair tucked out of sight behind his closed office door.
I truly hope he found peace and pleasure in life as he went forward after leaving Legal Aid.
Even at this late date (having just come across this notice), I would like to offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I knew John from age 7. He was always a very enterprising person who loved sports and people.
He introduced me to some very good friends; Mary S, Eleanor B, and Mavis S, and managed to place me on two different hockey teams at U of T that were in the same league. He got a kick out of that sort of thing, which made him a constant source of entertainment.
John was also an excellent student who skipped Grade 5 at Northlea, and qualified for Engineering at U of T when that was extremely difficult.
Later, he switched to Law at Osgoode and cleaned up with fast thinking in Moot Court, on a regular basis.
His dad, who he held in high esteem, died at a relatively early age, and I think that that had an effect on John, who changed lifestyles several times during his life.
Whatever the cause, he remained, like the legendary Charles Foster Kane, a very interesting and singular person.
