Rita Hogan Obituary

On Thursday, June 24, 2021, Rita Ellen Hogan (Heffernan) passed away peacefully in her sleep at Fairhaven Nursing Home, Peterborough. Rita was pre-deceased by her husband, Gerard Joseph Hogan, her daughter-in-law Joanne Hogan (Doris) and her grandson, Mark Hogan. She is survived by her five sons, Gerry (Vanessa), Ray (Mary Pat, d. Joanne), Carl, Paul, and Bernard (Wanda) and her nine grandchildren, Sarah, Christine, Ryan, Brandon, Elise, Jacob, Hannah, Neil, and Jared, and three great grandchildren, Shauna, Nathaniel, and Daisy.
Rita came from a large family, born and raised on a farm in Douro. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Frank and Mary (Burns) and her siblings, Tom (Agnes), Kay Johnston (John), Marie Swift (Frank), Helen Heffernan, Teresa Denham (Jim), Lucille McCarthy (Jack) and Gerard Heffernan. Rita's sister Rose Hickson has survived her, along with her sister-in-law Anne Heffernan.
Work was no stranger to Rita. While being a full-time teacher, she also worked first alongside her siblings and then with her husband and sons on the farm, all the while creating a home for her family. Mom instilled in us, the foundational ethics and mindsets that have helped to guide and inspire us to be a good person: just, fair, honest and hard working. She also saw the necessity of creating the time to volunteer as a CWL member in her Catholic Church as well as with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Her life ethic and profound respect for education, was all grounded in her faith: help others when you are able and do not shy away from the opportunity when it presents itself. Rita expressed her love for others, and for us, by what she did. She has left us all with so many good and lasting memories of a mother who cared for our good and well-being and wanted us all to succeed. We are grateful for her life and the life she gave us and ask God to embrace her with His eternal love, kindness, and joy.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Nisbett Funeral Home. The family will be having a private Mass for Rita with only immediate family attending. We would like to thank the staff at Fairhaven for their care and compassion during Rita's stay. They are also asking that in lieu of flowers, that you might consider donating to the Alzheimer's Society. Condolences may be left at www.nisbettfuneralhome.com.

I don’t know if I ever met anyone who was more delighted to be around people than aunt Rita. And the more people, the happier she became. I think it was also aunt Rita who introduced me to Calamine lotion (or something like) to help alleviate the fire in my legs from jumping all day into the hayloft in shorts—I think she may have saved my life! A kind, generous soul who managed those five hooligan cousins of mine into five fine men. Rest in peace.
