Sheila McConkey Obituary

Loving, vibrant, beautiful and strong mother of eight, grandmother of 26 and great-grandma of 16 passed at home after a most courageous journey. A remarkable woman whose wonderful giving nature, genuine compassion for others, interest in life and progress, were an inspiration to her large family, many friends and those she connected with in the real estate and farming industries.
Widowed at age 39 upon the tragic farm accident of her beloved husband John Charles 'Jack' McConkey (d Nov 1970) Sheila's unfailing dedication and commitment to raising her large family with unconditional love, while being active in dairy farming and the businesses of land development and real estate sales were a testament to her work ethic and zest for life. In 1973 she opened her independent real estate company while continuing to carry on her late husband's Lifloc Dairy Farm operation started by her father-in-law Norman McConkey. After her registered Holstein dispersal in 1981 Sheila readily provided use of her dairy barn to assist others in need and in 2013 supported her grandson Thom and Krista Murray in successfully continuing the Lifloc Dairy Farm legacy. In 1985 she was elected President of the Peterborough Real Estate Board.
Daughter of John Clare (d 1979) and Loretta (Schuett) (d 1987) Donnelly, granddaughter of the Hon. Senator J.J. and Julia (McNabb) Donnelly and Joseph and Marie Schuett, Sheila was born in Walkerton in 1931 and raised in Chepstow, Bruce County as a young girl. In 1938 Sheila moved with her family to Peterborough, attending St. Mary's Convent School and St. Peter's High School where she met her future husband Jack McConkey.
She worked in Toronto and Parry Sound hospitals as an X-ray technician before her marriage in 1954. Upon the passing of her father-in-law in 1956, Jack and Sheila took on the role operating the Lifloc Dairy business and began their own dairy farm operation on the Old Keene Rd., Otonabee Township.
Sister to Irene and Bill (d 2019) Rowan, Jim (d 1992) and Thelma (d 2021) Donnelly, Joan (d 2010) and Don (d 1971) McGillis, Tim (d 1977) and Marg (d 1977) Donnelly, sister-in-law to Rosemary McConkey, Ken (d 2020) and Doreen McConkey, Norma and Harold (d 1995) Bradley, Carolyn and Paul Hickson, Peter McConkey, and Priscilla and Doug (d 2011) Lorne.
Sheila will be forever remembered with heartfelt love and gratitude by her children: in Peterborough —Angela (Ash Prins), Catherine, Charlotte (Sid Bakker), John (Colleen Crowley), Margaret (Terry Murray) and in Oshawa —Adele (Phil Connelly), Martha (Kelly Aldred) and Rosemary (Lou Poliacik)

John - we are so saddened to hear this news.

We met in 1998 when you and your Mom found us our house (purchased from the Crossmans) on Royal Drive (due principally to your Mom´s negotiating skills!), and helped us sell it in 1999 when we (sadly) left for BC. We still have the George Elliott Liftlock watercolour you gave us as a wedding gift, which has always been proudly and fondly hung on our living room wall no matter where we have lived.

You, your family, and your mother are in our prayers and are close in our hearts. Requiescat in Pace, Sheila - a remarkable woman.

Sincerely,

Rob and Alexa Swiniarski

Sheila was a fascinating intelligent woman in my 15 yr old eyes when I first met her. I was always welcome in her home as were so many others. I married, moved away and lost touch. I am grateful to have visited her two summers ago. I was able to make my amends and thank her for everything she did for me. The World has lost a brilliant diamond.
