Stephen Elmhirst Obituary

August 5, 1969 - February 5, 2022

Stephen Elmhirst left this world on February 5, 2022, in the company of his loved ones, at Kingston General Hospital, succumbing to an infection in his brain.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife Caroline (daughters Georgia and Mary), his daughters Megan (Matt Coomber), Amanda (children Ashleigh and Andrew), his mother Carolyn, his father Peter, (Anne Marshall), brother Greg (wife Martina Linde, children Henry, Ryder and Nadiya), his aunt Ruth (Jan Tombs), his aunt Ruth Henderson (children Craig, Karen and Glen), his cousins and lifelong friends Catharine Tombs (Eloise) and Jeff Tombs (wife Tracy, children Brianna and Liam).
Stephen was a kind and compassionate man with a love of cooking, kiteboarding and flying. His life was packed with adventure and his steadfast love of family and home.
Stephen had many talents - he worked as a corrections officer in Millbrook, in Toronto Centre as a high level Air Traffic Controller at Lester B. Pearson Airport, as a Red Seal Cook at Elmhirst's Resort, later taking on the sale and delivery of weddings, he was a Commercial Pilot (third generation to fly and operate Elmhirst Vacation Air), a Certified Kiteboarding Instructor and most recently he was involved in the family farm business, having already mastered and managed the beef, turkey and duck inventory.
His easy smile, ability to laugh at himself and always see the best in others made him a popular figure at Elmhirst's Resort, as brides and resort guests will attest. He was also a capable mechanic and a willing co-worker. He will be missed when a crisis arises with boilers, water systems, heating systems and installing/removing docks. Stephen was always respectful and eager to please - he was not familiar with the word 'no'.
Stephen was passionate about many things, including helping others - he enjoyed cooking for One Roof in Peterborough - it gave him great joy to know he was making a difference.
The family suggest donations be made to One Roof, 99 Brock St, Peterborough ON in lieu of flowers.
Visitation to Celebrate Stephen's Life will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022,
1:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at Elmhirst Resort, 1045 Settlers Line, Keene, Ontario. Proof of vaccination and photo I.D. will be required. Please visit AshburnhamFuneral.ca to confirm your RSVP online or call the Ashburnham Funeral Home, 705-740-0444.

I was fortunate enough to work with Steve when he was an air traffic controller at Toronto Centre...the first thing that comes to mind about him was how KIND he always was and how sheepishly goofy he was in the most endearing way...like a little boy was trapped inside a grown man's body... and this man was always smiling whenever I saw him at work and always made time for me when I was a junior controller. It was a bummer when he left ATC but I loved reading about what a great life he led post ATC...wind on his back and sun on his face.
I am so sorry for your loss.

My sincere condolences to Caroline, Peter, and all of the Elmhirst family. I met Steve a few times through our mutual friend Ron M. He was one of the easiest people to meet and spend time with. He made you feel like you´d known him forever. So open and friendly and always with a smile and a laugh close at hand. Fly high Steve. You are obviously so loved and will be missed.

Stephen was the best.

He was a gracious guy. A force of nature. He was generous with his time, honest with his feelings and someone who always had your back. One of the original superheroes - will miss the Dude.
