Delmer Wideman Obituary

With sadness we announce that Del passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital on Monday, June 6, 2022 at the age of 93. Devoted and beloved husband of Rita. Loving father of Gail (Daryl), Tom (Liz), Barry (Kim), Tim (Sue) and stepfather of Peter (Petra) and Sylvia (Bob). Proud grandpa of Jason (Jennifer), Casey (Cheryl), Krista, Kelly (Derek), Alyssa, Michael, Taunya (Rob), Janine, Kara, Taylor, Matthew, Cory, Kate Dargie, Carrie Wise, Mathew (Beiers) and 18 great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Bernice and the late Alice, Floyd, Arvilla, Vera, Kenneth, LaVerne and Ronald. Fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews and their families. Del was preceded in death by his former wife Ortha. Founder of the Charcoal Steak House, Del with Ortha laid the groundwork for a thriving family business in the early 60s. In later years, Del and Rita with their vision, attention to detail, and commitment to a superb guest and employee experience brought the Charcoal Steak House to the highest levels of quality and consistency in service and cuisine. These standards have been the foundation of continued success at the Charcoal Steak House and Charcoal Group of Restaurants. An avid and accomplished golfer into his 90s, Del was a former member of Westmount and Deer Ridge Golf Clubs. He recently told us that his happiest memories were of afternoon golf games followed by dinner with Rita. A special thank you goes out to the staff of St. Mary's Hospital and Grand River Hospital (Freeport) for their care and compassion. Del's family will receive relatives and friends from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, June 13, 2022 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St. Kitchener (519) 749-8467. Very sorry to hear of Del's passing.

It sounds like he was a great family man, in addition to being the founder, with Rita, of the pre-eminent restaurant group in KW.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

My thoughts and prayers to the family of Del. May you be comforted by the many happy memories you shared with him.

My taste for fine cuisine started when I was so very young with my parents Ed and Linda Trendell taking me there for dinner on a regular basis. There wasn't anything on the menu I didn't like and that says a lot when you are just a small child. I don't have too many memories of myself as a young child but going out to dine at the Charcoal Steakhouse is very vivid. It was always a wonderful experience. Anytime I am back to Kitchener, it's still a place I go for lunch or dinner.

Del was a good friend and a business partner of my parents. I have fond memories of him as a savvy businessman, golfer and most of all of his warm and caring personality.

He will be missed.

Gail and family. So sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. I never met your Dad but over the years I have enjoyed many visits to the Charcoal Steakhouse, Eat & Putt, Wildcraft and Beer Town. While growing up, whenever we had a family celebration it was always the Charcoal Steakhouse. In later years, Wildcraft. May you think back to all the celebrations and joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Sending you hugs, peace and love. Beth ~

Through many years , visits to the Charcoal, numerous golf outings , trips to his place in Florida , interaction with Rita and his family . I count it a real joy to have had a friend like Del, so easy to talk to especially the times that we had trading of our gratitude of knowing our Lord and Saviour , Jesus Christ .
I know that Del is dancing with my mom and many others that have gone before us in heaven and praising God .
My day is coming ,Del , when i get there to finally golf as good as you.Agape Dave

Del was a wonderful man. He attracted people like moths to a light,,,he was in fact, an entrepreneurial bright light.
Friendly, gregarious, knowledgeable, helpful, and whose company it was always fun to be in. All his traits brought him well deserved life success,,,and he generously shared same with so many others.

We were privileged to work with and for him when we put Sportsworld together from the designs on paper into its built form. That project for Del and his fellow cigar smoking colleagues created many new Clients for us Stateside, in Italy, France, Quebec, across Ontario and in the Middle East in the Amusement Attractions Industry.

Design meetings for Sportsworld were convened in Del's Charcoal office and were always veiled under a low heavy cloud of cigar smoke.

Del's obituary so aptly sums up his full life and credits appropriately, others, including Rita ,Ortha and his sons.

A life well lived Del,,,it was my special privilege and pleasure in sharing time in your company.

My heartfelt condolences to Rita,Gail,Tom,Barry and Tim and families for the profound loss in the death of Del.

Respectfully and with deep admiration,

Rob Hilton (Hilton Foster Limted/ aka Hilton Landmarks Inc.)

My deepest sympathy for your loss. Del lived a long and vibrant life and left a significant impact on so many. I have lots of memories of growing up at Doonbrook and spending lots of time
playing around the house or in the pool as well as dinners at the Charcoal with the whole family.
