Dieter Herkert Obituary

Passed away at home after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer and dementia on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at the age of 82.

Beloved husband of Eleanor Herkert for 60 years and father of Ian Herkert and Jennifer Herkert. Dear brother of Guenter Holler of Seattle WA, and brother-in-law of Morgan Strassburger (Grace), Audrey Arnold, Barb Main (Dave), Ruby Kurt (Larry Smuck), Clifford Strassburger (Kathy), Robert Strassburger (Jan), and Deborah Sperling (Tom). Dear sisters-in-law Nancy Strassburger (the late Albert), Anne Strassburger (the late Dennis), Loraine Burley (the late Karon). Dieter will be missed by many nieces and nephews.

Dieter was predeceased by his mother Erna Holler, brothers Claus and Peter Herkert, sisters-in-law Marjorie Thompson (Wayne).

Dieter was born on July 11, 1940 in Karlsruhe Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1954. He was a long-time member of the Concordia Club where he shared his love of soccer and German culture with friends. Dieter and Eleanor ran a successful business, D&H Custom Woodworking, for 24 years and went on to enjoy retirement, traveling and spending summers at their beloved cottage in Sauble Beach.

The family would like to thank the staff from Home Instead and Home and Community Care Support Services for the wonderful care they provided to Dieter, with special thanks to Natoya Elcock.

Dieter's sense of humour and kind nature will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Dieter's family will receive relatives and friends from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2023 and from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. on Friday, June 2, 2023 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467. The funeral service will take place in the chapel of the funeral home on Friday at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Mark Ehlebracht officiating. Reception to follow. Interment Parkview Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Grand River Hospital Foundation - Cancer Centre or the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).

Dear Eleanor, so sad to the sad news about Dieter, we have only just heard now in late June. My soccer memories of Dieter go back to 1970 when I met him. I played with him, against him and back with him in our oldtimers league. Our deepest condolences to you and your family.
