September 1, 1940 - August 17, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of Duncan Murie announce his passing, quietly in his sleep, August 17, 2022, at the age of 81. Duncan was born in Dumbarton, Scotland, and immigrated to Canada with his wife Marion and two children, in the late 1960s. Duncan was trained as a cooper in Scotland and when he came to Canada, he worked for Canada Barrels and Keg (Canbar); some of the barrels in the Seagram's sculpture are his. Duncan loved his family, good food (especially steak), whisky, and building things. Duncan was a craftsman and fearlessly took on many projects: building a fireplace, fences, hot tubs, boats, and, of course, accumulating the materials needed for his projects in many piles around the house and shed. Even in the later days of his dementia, he would bring people down to show them the bar he built himself. Duncan shifted his career, going back to school in his late forties and then working at the University of Waterloo alumni department where he was known for his smile, dedication, and cheesecakes. He was proud of his Scottish heritage, never more evident than when he got his MacDougall tartan kilt and regalia. He was happy to torment visitors with Jimmy Shand songs and he hated the song "I Love a Rainy Night". He is survived by his wife Marion, children Angela and Scott and grandchildren Alasdair Murie-Wilde and Lilith Murie-Wilde; his brother Jim Murie; nieces Sandra Lees, Hazel Mills, Julie McNee, Jackie Beitz, and nephew Douglas Murie. Duncan made everyone feel welcome in his house, always laying out a lavish spread of food and drink, no matter the occasion. He was proud of the home he and his wife made together; the backyard became an ice rink in winter for his children and then later on an oasis for his grandkids, complete with blow up pool and alligator floatees. Alasdair and Lilith will always remember the toasted cheesies with crusts cut off, the drives to and from dance, soccer, swimming, and high school, and his constant, never-ending support and love. Duncan's family will receive relatives and friends at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre, 1001 Ottawa St. S., Kitchener, on Saturday, August 27, 2022, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Cremation will follow. A celebration of Duncan's life will be held in October. A date and time will be announced closer to the time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Alzheimer Society.
