H. Selman Obituary

Tribute to Dick Selman On December 26, 2020 we lost our Dad, Harold Richard Selman--known to many as "Dick", just 8 days shy of his 85th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Vivian, who took tremendous care of him at home until the end. We, his daughters and our husbands-Kim & Scott Hetherington, Dawn Selman & Ken Bisch and Leslie & Wilf Lennon-will miss his loving care and humour. He is also mourned by his grandchildren, Evan (Jess Pollice) and Blake Hetherington, Ciera and Celina Bisch, and Brock and Brandon (Dustine Crowley) Wesson, who share wonderful memories of their Grandpa. Dad is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Helen Selman, and brother-in-law, Keith Lovell. He was predeceased by his parents, Orval & Edith Selman, sister and brother-in-law, Lauriss & Larry Elliott, sister, Gwen Lovell and niece, Joanne (nee Selman). Dad is also remembered by many nieces and nephews, especially Scott Elliott with whom he had a valued relationship in his later years. Dad deeply appreciated his relationship with Vivian's children, Susan & Paul McGill, Wendy & Peter Dantzer, Patrick Schultz and Gary Schultz and their children. Dad was a charismatic figure and the quintessential host; he thoroughly enjoyed life with Vivian at his side in Waterloo in his golden years. Prior to moving back to Waterloo, Dad enjoyed life in Oliphant with his wife, Marj (nee McKenzie), who predeceased him in 2007. Dad formed many relationships in Oliphant, including Marj's children, Andy George & Joanne Reid, Al & Val George and Patti Hegy and their children. Summers were spent sailing and winters spent on the snowmobile trails. Dad was born in Sarnia but later in life moved to Kitchener where he worked for the City of Kitchener as a Purchaser before achieving the position of Commissioner of Supply and Service. He went on to a career in life insurance and financial planning with Mutual Life (later Mutual Group, Clarica and now Sun Life) until his retirement. After retirement, Dad became a volunteer driver for several organizations including the Children's Aid Society and Canadian Cancer Society. Dad enjoyed many hobbies and instilled in all of us a sense of humour, yet taught us consideration and fair play. Many memories were made at Sauble Beach, both on the beach in the summer and on snowmobiles in winter. Oliphant was the destination of choice for power boating, fishing and later on sailing. Dad enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren, especially at Sauble Beach and Oliphant, where he would take them mini-golfing, snowmobiling, sailing and fishing. For many years, Dad tended a pumpkin patch and grew massive pumpkins much to the grandchildren's delight. He will be sorely missed by Vivian, all his family and friends. May he rest in peace. Because the pandemic currently prevents gathering, there will be no formal service held. Cremation has taken place. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the charity of one's choice.
