Joe Keating Obituary

1927-2021

Joe Keating passed away in the early morning of December 26, 2021, at Forest Heights Long Term Care, after several years of failing health and a brief illness at the age of 94. He was born and raised in Kitchener and was the youngest of seven children of Fred and Rita Keating. He was predeceased by his two brothers and four sisters. Joe married Joan (nee McMahon) in August 1952, and together they raised five children until her death on November 30, 1985. He leaves behind his children; Mary Catherine, Martha (Marty) Cohen, Matthew, Michael (Deb), and Sean (Linda). He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Courtney (Josh) Viseau, Emily Zmija, Brett Playford, Anneliese (Charlie), Jacob Neumann, Ryan Keating, Jennifer, Matt Keating, Sam, John Keating as well as two great-granddaughters; Sydney and Paighton Viseau. Dear brother of Frank Keating (Peggy) of Connecticut. He was grateful for the kindness of Patti Duguid during his last months. Predeceased by his wife Joan (nee McMahon); and siblings, Theresa, Anne, Marg, Frank, and Jack "Red" Keating. Joe was a faithful parishioner of St. Anne's RC Church for many years. He was an active member of the congregation and was involved in the Knights of Columbus. He worked as a Purchasing Agent for Electrohome and then started the purchasing program at Conestoga College. Joe was involved in the Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI) in Buffalo N.Y. He began as a participant and then became a teacher. He published papers on creative problem-solving. Joe was fondly remembered by his colleagues there and remained close to his fellow teacher, Joette Field. He began a consulting business offering seminars on creative problem solving to the fields of Business and Education. He participated as a teacher in the Shad Valley Program for gifted children which was offered at summer programs on many University Campuses in Canada. After his retirement, he was a volunteer for the Senior Support Program in Kitchener. He also traveled to many places including Ireland (a lifetime dream), Portugal, and Greece. Joe often said he was very lucky and had a beautiful life. He is remembered as a gentle soul and a great sense of humour and a positive outlook and a capacity of the profound. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his family. As he always used to say to us "be good, have fun and enjoy your life". Arrangements entrusted to the Henry Walser Funeral Home, Kitchener. Joe's Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anne's RC Church, 268 East Ave, Kitchener,
on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at 11 a.m. Fr. Brian Quigley officiating. Interment Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener immediately following the Mass. Relatives and friends must RSVP to attend the Mass through the funeral home website or by phoning 519-749-8467. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Grand River Hospital Foundation- Cancer Center would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
