John Wang Obituary

We are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of John Hsi-Chang Wang in hospital on May 1, 2023 at the age of 92. He was the beloved husband of the late May Tao-Mei Wang (2011) for 53 years. John will be deeply missed by his children, eldest son David and his wife April and second son Michael and his wife Barbara as well as 12 grandchildren, Joseph (Yo), Mary (Yi), Margaret, Madeleine, Michelle, John, James, Monica, Jordan, Matthew, Peter and Sophie and 4 great-grandchildren, Ella, Gemma, Dominic and Peter. He will be fondly remembered by many friends, and extended family.

John was born and raised in Tianjin China. At age 20, he moved to Taiwan where he met the love of his life, May, whom he later married. After moving to Canada in 1958, John received his Masters degree from University of Manitoba followed by his PhD from the University of Saskatchewan. John and May remained in Saskatoon where John worked as a Professor of anatomy at the University of Saskatchewan and pioneered new research in genetics and chromosome banding. After the birth of their first grandchildren, he and his wife moved to Kitchener-Waterloo to be closer to the family. John became an active member of his church community at the Kitchener Waterloo Chinese Alliance Church where he maintained many close relationships up to his final day.

Those who knew John will always remember his kind and gentle disposition together with his wonderful sense of humour. He was easy-going and always looked for the best in others. He will be missed and fondly remembered by all his friends and family.

Our deepest condolences to the loss of Professor Wang, who brings our memories back to 1980s when both my wife and I were graduate students at University of Saskatchewan. Professor Wang and his dear wife May, had consoled many lonely hearts, and offered us home bound feelings in so many occasions. On the other hand, we are happy for Professor Wang for his successful and joyful life with his academic career, family and social circle. He to us is a role model- the way to go for the journey of life! May the peace be with Professor Wang - You lives forever in our heart!

It was deeply sad to heard the passing of John, our good friend while he and May were in Saskatoon. When we first landed to Saskatoon, we received tremendous help from them. We also watched grow-up of David and Michael, and took them as role models of our children. Those vivid memories remain part of our lives. Please send our condolence to David, Michael and their families. -- Chun Chen and Wei Xiao from Saskatoon

I first met Professor Wang Hsi-Chang in 1975 when I joined the University of Saskatchewan as an assistant professor. Professor Wang, known as Lao Wang among his close friends, was the kindest person I have ever met. He and his wife May welcomed me to their home for dinners and visits and introduced me to many other friends and families in Saskatoon. Over the years, we became very good friends, even though we were in different specialities and a generation apart in age. Ironically, Lao Wang, an anatomist, should know so much more about how to relate to people than me, a sociologist. His sincere and gentle approach to people touched the heart of all who came to know him. He gave me candid advice, in a soft way, about the pitfalls of early successes in life. It was only when I became senior professor years later that I began to appreciate his wisdom. I visited his home in Kitchener twice after he retired, and as usual, Lao Wang and May treated me to the most delicious cuisine that I had missed. I shall always remember you, Lao Wang---my university colleague, my long-time friend, and perhaps unknown to you, my mentor in human relations. May you join May in heavenly peace.
