Passed away peacefully on October 4, 2021 at Clair Hills, Waterloo, at the age of 89.
He is survived by four children, Rachel, Daniel (Tamara), Rebecca (Elon) and LaMaia; three stepchildren Robin, Randy (Jackie) and Ronni Alexander, and three grandchildren Katherine Elizabeth, Victor Alexi and Lorelei Leslie Cramer. Mert was born and raised in Los Angeles and attended both Caltech and UCLA. He worked for many years as an electrical engineer before deciding to pursue his doctorate. Mert moved to Waterloo in 1981 from Los Angeles with his late wife Greta, to pursue a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. Mert had widely varied interests including murder mysteries, theatrical lighting, tropical fish, Inuit Art, philately, and bad puns. Mert made many good friends in Waterloo and he will be missed by them and by his family. As he often told those of us who knew and loved him: "Keep smiling, everyone will wonder what you are up to." In true Mert fashion, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. A private interment will be held at Parkview Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to
