Mike Mavros was born on June 18, 1956 in Aetos, Greece, to his father, Zesse Mavros, and mother, Marika Mavros (Delidthou). He died at Freeport Hospital in Kitchener on January 14, 2022. Both his parents and his two youngest siblings predeceased him. His only surviving close relative is his younger brother Lou "Elias/Ilias" Mavros. Mike came to Canada with his younger brother Lou when his parents emigrated from Greece to Canada in the early 1960s.
The early years in Canada were very difficult being a young ethnic lad; he faced a lot of racism and was looked down upon by native born Canadians. Things got better over time. In high school, he starred on the football and wrestling teams. He was so good at wrestling that he was invited to the Canadian Olympic Wrestling Team camp in Thunder Bay. Except for the cold, these were some of the happiest days of his life. Due to a severe injury in the run up to the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Mike's Olympic dreams of competing were cut short. After wrestling Mike dabbled and excelled in boxing and martial arts.
After trying a few jobs, Mike settled working along side his father at Weston's Bakeries on Victoria Street, Kitchener, for many years until he got sick. When away from work, Mike was always willing to share his insights, opinions, and theories with his social circle and Tim Horton's coffee clutch buddies.
Near the end, Mike had to have his right leg amputated and was facing multiple severe health issues. In hindsight, Mike probably should have taken his doctor's warnings to get his diabetes under control more to heart.
