Paul Bosch Obituary

Paul Frederick Bosch died in Lexington, KY on the morning of his 92nd birthday, January 21, 2023, surrounded by loving family. After living in Waterloo Ontario for forty years, Paul had recently moved to a nursing home in Lexington to be nearer to his family.

Paul was a retired pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. Born in Buffalo, NY, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Muhlenberg College (1952) and he received his BD from The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (1956).

In 1956 he was ordained as Assistant Pastor at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Williamsport, PA, and in 1960 he became the first ordained Lutheran campus pastor at Syracuse University, NY, where he served for almost 20 years, and was a campus peace activist marching with Martin Luther King, Jr. He married Kathryn Stinar of Lakefield, MN in 1961.

In 1979 he served the congregation of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Amherst, MA, and the five-college area there. Paul then became Lutheran Campus Pastor at Waterloo, ON, in 1982, serving University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. Upon his retirement, he was appointed by WLS as its first Emeritus Dean of the Chapel. In 2016, Bosch was named Distinguished Alumnus by United Lutheran Seminary. For over 20 years Paul's monthly Worship Workbench essays have appeared and are still available on the ELCIC's worship website, worship.ca

Paul's gifts included a natural ebullience of spirit and a joyous love of life. He is survived by his sister Ruth Bosch Becker (Pennsylvania), sister-in-law Carol Bosch (New York), and by his daughters and their families: Anna Bosch and Jonathan Allison of KY and their children Victor and Philip Allison; and Sarah and David Holbrooke of Telluride CO, and their children Bebe Bischoff, Kitty Holbrooke and Wiley Holbrooke. Mourners include a wide family circle of cousins, nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Lutheran Campus Ministry at Syracuse University (lcmsyracuse.org), or to the UN Refugee Agency (unhcr.org). A memorial service celebrating the life of Paul Bosch will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 445 Anndale Road, Waterloo, Ontario, at 2:00 p.m. ET, February 25, 2023; livestream on https://www.facebook.com/christlutheranwaterloo/

We will miss our interactions with Paul painting at the arts centre. He would attend our life drawing classes for years but not draw the model. He would be off in a corner painting his own thing and just enjoying the ambiance in the room, the artists, the music.
Would leave the painting to dry overnight and come back the next morning to pick it up. Always happy , with something nice to say or suggest an idea for the Button Factory to try. He did that weekly for years. His energy was what makes our little arts hub so special!
Such an incredible man and free spirit!

I enjoyed my interactions with Paul on many occasions at Wilfrid Laurier University. He was a very kind and erudite companion. He was a joy to be around and he always saw good in each person. He was a special friend.
