Sheila McGraw (nee Murray) passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the age of 60, at Grand River Hospital.
Sheila was the beloved second daughter (known as the "Wee Tumphy") of Patricia (1999) and Alan (1993) and the dear stepdaughter of Beverley. Sheila's three siblings, Heather (Neil), Barbara, and Bruce will always think of themselves as The Four Kids (Hodder, Siel, Barbie, and Brucie). Family gatherings will not be the same for Quinn, Avery, Ali, Shae, and Tiffani without their Aunt Sheila there to liven things up.
Of all the people in her life, there was definitely one person at the centre of Sheila's world, her daughter Nicole. Sheila directed her considerable energy, passion, love, and devotion to her one and only "Pooter". One of the happiest days of Sheila's life was the day Nicole married her husband Kyler.
After graduating with a combined Honours Degree in French and English from the University of Waterloo, and earning a Bachelor of Education at Western, Sheila went on to enjoy a 25-year career teaching languages at Stanley Park and Forest Hill public schools. Madame McGraw thoroughly enjoyed being in the classroom. Some highlights of her career also included running school clubs, accompanying students on trips to Quebec, and sharing her musical talents at school events. Madame genuinely valued all the close relationships she formed with students and colleagues over the years.
Throughout her life, Sheila faced many health challenges and with each one, she showed unsurpassed courage and a fierce determination to tackle it head on. Her main concern was never for herself. She was always looking out for those who loved her.
Sheila was a very thoughtful and generous soul who loved to cook big, delicious dinners for others, always going above and beyond to prepare something special for family birthdays and other occasions.
She had a lifelong passion for music and was a gifted musician. A self-taught pianist and guitarist, Sheila could play a song after hearing it only once. She formed a band with her brother and, together with friends, they had frequent jam sessions, performing many songs by her favourite artists, including Elton John, Supertramp, Max Webster, Jeff Healey, and Stevie Wonder.
Sheila enjoyed travelling and was especially fond of the times she spent in Eastern Canada and in her parents' home country, Scotland.
A homebody at heart, Sheila was never happier than when she was playing the piano with any one (or two, or five) of her many "keenten" companions nearby, most recently her sweet boys Dusty and Ollie.
Sheila's true home away from home was Sauble Beach. Sunbathing in the sand, jumping over big waves, eating a fish and chips supper, watching the sunset, and sitting around the campfire with family were all Sheila needed for a perfect day.
In Sheila's memory, donations may be made to the K-W Humane Society. Messages, memories and condolences for the family can be shared on Sheila's memorial at
www.henrywalser.com.
There will be a private family gathering later this summer to celebrate Sheila's life, where those who loved her the most will remember her with many songs and stories.
Sleep sweet, Sheila.
