Sadly, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, in Kitchener, on Sunday, January 9, 2022, after a heart-breaking month-long battle with Covid and Pneumonia. He was born in Latvia on May 3, 1935, where the family lived until WWII when they were forced to leave their native land. After four years, as displaced persons in Europe, they finally made their way to Pembroke, Ontario, where his father had secured a position with Ontario Hydro. At age 13, Uldis and his family began their new life in Canada and eventually moved to Kitchener. After graduating from Universities in Buffalo and Toronto with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he joined Raytheon Canada Ltd, in Waterloo, where he was employed for the next 30 odd years. Predeceased by his parents Peter (Peteris) and Olga Lauks. He leaves behind his wife and dearest friend of 51 years, Barbara Heather. A kind and gentle man who loved animals. All the dogs and cats in the neighborhood were his friends with, of course, their pets taking center stage. He and Heather loved to travel, in particular skiing in Austria and Switzerland. Also, some lovely ski holidays, in Alberta, in the Canadian Rockies at Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper, along with Whistler in British Columbia. Many beautiful trips to Britain, Scandinavia, the Caribbean and three wonderful return visits to Latvia. Of course, they also explored most corners of Canada in their travels. Very much the do-it-yourselfer, he loved finding new ways to solve challenges around the house and elsewhere. Even though he had little time to enjoy it, he loved planning for and playing with his model railroad. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of a wonderful life will take place when winter has passed and there is less Covid. Thank you to all their dear friends who have helped Uldis and Heather so much, and a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and the whole team at St Mary's. As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, Toronto Metro Zoo, or Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
