June 26, 1936 - February 9, 2022
Uwe passed away after a long struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Angela, his son, Andrew, daughter-in-law, Susan, and daughter, Serena. His family is extremely grateful to the staff at the Cook Family Residence of Hospice Waterloo Region for their compassionate care during the last month of Uwe's life. Uwe emigrated from Germany in 1957, escaping from a war-ravaged country and a tragic childhood. He fell in love with Canada immediately, and became a citizen in 1967. Because many of his fellow Canadians had difficulty pronouncing his first name, he often went by his middle name, Werner, especially in his professional life. Uwe met his wife, Angela, at the Waterloo Tennis Club - it was love at first match! They married on February 8th, 1964, had two children, and spent the rest of their lives together - Uwe held on until the day after their 58th anniversary. Uwe found his niche in retail management, working for Sears Canada for 30 years. After he retired, he was able to invest more time in volunteering. As proud as he was of his adopted country, he was just as proud of his German heritage, and worked tirelessly to honour the contributions and preserve the history and culture of German immigrants in Waterloo Region. Highlights of his volunteering service include: Concordia Club (member since 1967, president 2002-2011), K-W Oktoberfest Inc (director for 10 years), German Canadian Congress (director for 13 years), German Pioneers Day (director for 13 years), German Canadian Remembrance Society (director for 13 years), Co-operative Council of German Clubs of Waterloo Region (15 year Ontario Volunteer Service Award). There will be no funeral service, but the family would be comforted to read condolences and memories shared on the Henry Walser Funeral Home website (
www.henrywalser.com). As expressions of sympathy, donations to the
Canadian Cancer Society or Hospice Waterloo Region would be appreciated (cards available at the funeral home).
