Wayne Stecho Obituary

Passed on Thursday, October 29, 2020 with the love of his life, Laurie, his wife of 20 years, at his side. Loving father to Steve (Jody) and Mark (Cobi). Cherished Papa to Madison, Nathan, Dustyn and Shelby. Dear son of Anne and son-in-law of Georgette. Brother to Sharon and Terry (Mary) and brother-in-law to Jackie (Mark), Louise (Al) and Robert (Betty). Fondly remembered by nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by father, Harold and father-in-law, Stan. Wayne grew up in Bridgeport, attending St. Anthony Catholic School and St. Jerome's High School. He owned and operated the family business, Harold Stecho Electric from 1984 until his retirement in 2014. He was a fourth degree knight with Kitchener Knights of Columbus, past member of Deer Ridge Golf Course. Wayne was very involved with the Carmel of St. Joseph and the Carmelite Sisters. He served on the lay committee raising funds on their behalf. Wayne was a man of integrity, known for his business savvy and a respected leader with vision and pride in the community in which he lived and worked. Wayne will forever be remembered for the ways he helped other people. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Grand River Hospital and his family gratefully acknowledges the care given to him, and the allowances made for us to visit him in his final days at the Freeport Palliative Care Unit. Private cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Grand River Hospital Foundation - Cancer Centre or Freeport Site or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home). Sincerest condolences to: Laurie, Anne and all the Stecho family.
Well over two decades ago Wayne Stecho came into our lives. It was evident Wayne had a larger than life personality. He was tall, strong, clearly determined and a man of firmly held beliefs. Wayne was incredibly proficient and knowledgeable in a host of areas. A successful man and highly respected in the community. Wayne had a zest for life and all it had to offer. We learned quickly that any thought of family and friends engaging in something new, different and fun would instantly be met with Wayne’s stock line in such a circumstance, “Let’s do it!” We would temporize with, “Well maybewhen?” Then we would hear Wayne’s stock answer, “Now!” Eventually we would keep the wilder ideas quiet as we knew our bluff would always be called and Wayne meant what he said. There really was nothing Wayne would not try and if he enjoyed it would throw himself into with gusto. A life well and truly lived.
This was Wayne on the surface. This was his face to the world. We soon came to know Wayne’s deeper self. He was a man who cared deeply for family. Any hint that Wayne caught wind of that help was needed would result in his almost instance appearance with tool belt and all needed equipment. Any time of the day or night he would drop everything and be there if he felt help was needed. There are just too many times to count and too many stories to tell of the times this occurred. It was not just family. Wayne would help anyone with no thought whatsoever of recompense. Wayne simply felt it was his responsibility to be the kind of man that others could rely upon and count on in any circumstance.
Wayne enjoyed the simple pleasures of being with family, having a beverage, chatting, debating and showing a keen interest in the lives, challenges and successes of others. We were so very pleased and proud to have Wayne and Laurie as the godparents of our son. We know Wayne regarded it as important that James was baptized in the Catholic faith and he made special arrangements with his old and dear friend Father Bernie Hayes for this to happen. He made the day special.
We could go on at length about the wonderful man Wayne Stecho was, brother-in-law, godfather/uncle and dear friend and the very many good times we had together. It is difficult to articulate just how profoundly his absence will be felt and how very deeply we all will miss him.

My sincere condolences to Wayne's family and friends. I got to know Wayne quite well while I was his commercial account manager in the 1990s. He was a gentleman and a scholar. May God grant him eternal peace.

Laurie, Aunt Ann, Sharon , Terry and all your families.
So saddened to hear of Wayne’s passing. Our hearts are with you all.
I’ll remember him fondly in my teens as my older “nifty” cousin and later in life as a good hearted son, father, husband and yes - still my cousin. A great man who will be sadly missed.

to all:
I first met Wayne about three years ago. We shared hunting , shooting and golf activities. Wayne was always kind and had great stories although he was quick to point out if someone was interfering with his golf shot and just as quick to forget the flare up. All in good fun. When my wife and I moved to Kitchener last year he was very helpful with suggestions for the use of local contractors. I had hoped to get to know him better this year but then Covid hit, Wayne took a turn for the worse and then suddenly as if lighting had struck he was gone.
He will be missed.

His smile will be forever a gift to our hearts. How we loved him cooking in our kitchen, golfing in The Rooney Open, and enjoying his company over a great meal and a Margarita! He will be forever remembered as “ one of the good guys”.
Our love and prayers to his forever sweetheart Laurie and his treasured boys and family.
