David HUFF Obituary

HUFF, Dr. David Gordon April 21, 1946 - August 29, 2021 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and brother, David, peacefully, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. David Huff was born to Gordon and Mildred Huff (nee Beattie) April 21, 1946, in Brantford, Ontario, and was the oldest brother to Peter and Richard. David graduated from Lorne Park Secondary School in Mississauga, Ontario in 1964 and subsequently attended the University of Guelph, in the Veterinary Sciences program, graduating in 1969 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. While at the University of Guelph, David was a member of the swim team, competing in long distance swimming events. While attending University of Guelph, he met and married his Wife of 50 years, Barbara (nee Gray). Following a brief stint at his uncle's veterinary hospital in Brantford, Ontario, David and Barbara moved to Vancouver to open a veterinary hospital in partnership with a former classmate. It was in Vancouver where their two sons, Chris and Craig were born. David opened a number of veterinary hospitals in the Vancouver area before establishing Huff Animal Hospital in Tsawasssen, where he practiced for more than 30 years. His practice treated all pets and eventually even exotic animals. He and Barbara were well-respected members of the community. In 1984, David and Barbara moved to their dream home on the beach at Boundary Bay. In addition to his practice, David joined the Vancouver Aquarium in the early 1980's and ultimately became the primary consulting veterinarian. He worked there for more than 30 years. David also participated in the cleanup and care of animals harmed by the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska in 1988, as well as the rescue of Springer, a northern resident killer whale. David also led the Aquarium's rescue and rehabilitation program for marine mammals. In his spare time, David was an avid runner, completing a marathon and also loved to road bike, often going on long rides with his friends. David was well-liked and respected by all who knew him, and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson's Society of British Columbia or the Michael J Fox Foundation would be greatly appreciated. David was our vet while living in Ladner and he operated on our black lab, removing his left front leg as a result of a car hitting him. Rip David. Forever grateful for what you did for us

A beautiful man Dave was and a top vet. My memories go back to the 1980s...when Dr. Dave took care of any health issues our rottie, Darth, suffered from. Thankfully, mostly fleas! I can't help but smile as I recall visits to Dr. Huff's clinic in Tsawwassen. The moment we parked the car Darth would tremble with excitement. In the clinic our dog would leap into Dave's arms...who swung him onto the table for treatment. Every visit was a joy. The good doctor's smile felt like a dose of good medicine for our spirits...dog most of all I think. I've thought of him over the years but only seconds ago his name came to mind and I turned to Google to discover Dave had passed. So Dave ...up in heaven for 12 years caring for his patients and consoling the folks who gave them a forever homes....I know you're resting in peace...and again, THANK YOU the care you gave the late Darth. We loved seeing David at Winskill, riding the bike in the weight room. He was always such a polite and genuine man.
I first met him as Dr. Huff, he took great care of our cats and helped us through their difficult end of life in a supportive and caring way.
We will all miss him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We are saddened to hear of David's passing. Dave was a long time neighbour and friend to us, especially in the 70's and 80's. I remember the fun at our neighbourhood baseball games with Dave. He was also our vet for many years at his local clinic on 56th avenue. Our condolences to Barb, Chris and Craig. He did fight the fight against Parkinson's, he was a strong man. RIP, Dave.

I often think back to how caring Dr. Huff was with all our pets, and the feeling of pride we had when seeing ‘our vet’ on the news when interviewed for the Vancouver Aquarium rescues. Our little Boston Lucy would calm in his presence, and we knew we could trust him with all her care needs. So patient and calm, his love for animals and their families shone through. He will be greatly missed.
