Alan ROGERS Obituary

Alan "Butch" Rogers of Burlington, ON passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 3rd at Joseph Brant Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Butch was born on September 5th, 1934, in Brantford, ON. He was a true Renaissance man. He spent much of his life playing music and playing sports, both of which he loved. He is survived by his loving wife Audrey, nee Richardson. They were married for 63 wonderful years. They raised three children Brent (Rosie), Brad (Laurene) and Susan (Bill). Together they skied, hiked, and travelled the world. They also spent dreamy summers at their cottage in Honey Harbour, ON. Since Butch had dedicated his life to a career in education, he was able to enjoy summers off up north.

Butch was particularly fond of playing football. He played for Westdale High school, McMaster University and professionally in the CFL for the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger Cats. He went on to coach the Nelson High School football team during the early years of his teaching career.

Later he became a passionate Vice Principal in the Peel Board of Education with time spent at Westwood Secondary School, T. L. Kennedy Secondary School, and Morning Star Secondary School.

Audrey often joked that Butch needed to retire from retirement as he was so busy with all his activities in the community. He was actively involved with the local Suicide Prevention Association, which lead to his very important work with the Self Esteem Network. Butch was a past president of the Self Esteem Network which enabled him to do a lot for people in distress. He was also a long-time member of Port Nelson United Church.

As a way to enjoy playing music, Butch often sang during the Burlington Footnotes annual performances of Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance! He was also a member of the musical group The Singing Strummers.

Butch was also a dedicated Mason, where he held the following positions: 33rd Degree Mason, Commander in Chief, Moore Sovereign Consistory and Past Master, Temple Lodge.

Butch imparted his love of music and sports on his children too. Many Sundays were spent skiing as a family and through the week he made sure to attend his kids sporting events.

Butch's greatest love was for his family. In addition to his wife and kids he had 6 cherished grandchildren, Damian, Devon, Leo, Jack and Julia. He was very close to his older brother Doug, who gave him the nickname "Butch" when they were kids. Butch had three loving nieces, Lynne, Judy and Christine and two loving nephews, Craig and Jed. In addition to this were numerous cousins that spent many wonderful times together.

Second only to his family were Butch's numerous friends. He loved them all, old and new and made them wherever he went. He loved to laugh and tell stories that would sometimes make people laugh!

Dogs were another part of his family that were very important. He taught his children how to be a loving and responsible dog owner by example and truly believed they were man's best friend.

Audrey wants to share the following poem that has special meaning to her.

The tide recedes
but leaves behind
bright seashells
on the sand,

The sun goes down,
but gentle warmth
still lingers
on the land,

The music stops,
and yet it echoes on
in sweet refrains...

For every joy
that passes,
something beautiful
remains.

A private family service will be held soon and a larger celebration of life will be announced in the future.

Donations would be appreciated to Port Nelson United Church or The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation Learning Centre for Hamilton.

My condolences to Butch's family.
I was a neighbour of Butch and his wife for 31 years. I moved away in 2019.
I am so sorry both for your loss and the tardiness of my response.
Butch was an outstanding individual, nicely summed up in his obituary. Butch's selflessness touched so many, in so many positive ways. It is a huge loss and a great honour to have met the man who meant so much to so many. Butch always had a moment to stop and chat, pet my Black Lab Ben (he did so love our 4-legged friends). He never had a hard word for anyone or any thing in particular.
Rest peacefully dear neighbour with many thanks for sharing your time with all of us. God Bless!

Al was my geography teacher at Nelson High School in the early 70s. We always waited to see who'd be summoned to the office each morning. I had the pleasure of teaching two grandsons at MMR. I always enjoyed our chats and particularly at the reunion in 96. Always a gentleman and truly respected by former students. RIP Al.

May I express my sincere sympathy to the Rogers family at this very difficult time. Of course, I remember Brad, Brent, and Susan, whom I had the pleasure of teaching in math classes at BCHS - and meeting Audrey and Butch at parents´ evenings. After BCHS, I encountered Butch from time to time at educational events where I always received a warm, friendly greeting - and news of my three former students. Butch´s obituary details clearly the joyous, accomplished, and service-oriented life he led and shared with his family.

Thinking of you, Marie Jacobs

What can you say about someone you have known your whole life. I remember thinking Butch was such a "hunk" when I was a teenager. When I married Hal and he joined Lodge, we continued to see Butch and Audrey and he was always so upbeat. I can still hear him singing in the Scottish Rite Cathedral. We can feel some relief that he lived life to the fullest and that he knew how blessed he was with Audrey and the rest of the family. I know you all have loads of happy memories to sustain you.

Mr Rogers was our neighbour, my home room teacher, and ultimately my friend. He encouraged me, and my late brother Kevin, by taking a genuine interest in our progress growing up. As #14 in the Defensive Backfield of the Hamilton Tiger Cats, he was our hero and a Grey Cup Champion.

Butch was the glue for keeping the Mac Gals and Guys together for 65 years or more starting with the football team at Mac. He promoted McMaster at every opportunity and served on the '59 Alumni Committee. There are many of us who are proud to regard Butch as a caring and wonderful friend.
We will forever treasure his memory. Deepest sympathy to Audrey, family and friends.

Another fine man and fellow Mason has gone to the Grand Lodge above. I first met Butch when I become a member of the Scottish Rite and later on Brent.
Being a young member so long ago Butch also made the new members welcome.
As stated, Butch was always smiling and a story to tell.
Now in my med 60's. I often say to people. The finest men I have met have been Masons and Butch was one of them.
The world needs more people like Butch.
May you rest in Pax.
