Angelo ZIZZO Obituary

Zizzo, Dr. Angelo It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Angelo Joseph Zizzo who is now with his beautiful and beloved wife and soulmate Judy (Blackwood). He was a proud father, grandfather, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend, and doctor to many. He passed away after a brief and difficult illness in the early evening of April 2nd at his cherished St. Joseph's Hospital in his 79th year. Heartbroken are his children Lynn (Bennett, Nathan, Lauren Buckley), Dr. Dean and Gale (Hannah and Aidan) and Mark and Romina (Monique, Lucas). Not a day went by where he did not miss his wife Judy and his family finds peace in the fact that they are together again. Angelo will be missed by his sister Carolyn Cornale (Michael), and brothers David (Francine), Chuck (Clara), Richard (Karen) and numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents Angelo Sr. and Angela (Scime). He was blessed to have so many friends and colleagues who loved him as much as we did. Angelo was an icon of Hamilton medicine and at St. Joseph's Hospital where he had spent his entire professional life. He was a family doctor with offices on Hamilton mountain for more than 50 years. He will be remembered not only for what he did, but who he was. He loved his family, his friends, his colleagues and staff. He had a special relationship with his patients, who he spent a lifetime caring for. He was a past President of the Hamilton Academy of Medicine and two-time President of the St. Joseph's Hospital medical staff. He hosted a weekly talk show for a decade on CHML in the 1990s and was a regular on CHCH News. He has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Ontario Medical Association Distinguished Service Award. A forever passionate and enthusiastic teacher and student, Angelo never shied away from educating others and always remained humble enough to continue learning. He was a true student of the art and science of medicine. He will always be remembered as a thoughtful and caring doctor who was universally respected and admired by his patients and colleagues. Mostly, we will miss his intelligence, humor, love of family and zest for life. Charismatic and high energy would be an understatement. He filled and touched every room he entered with his enthusiastic and happy demeanor. His constant whistling and bounce in his step in the halls of his office will be missed by all who worked with him. He worked to care for his patients right up to the end. He attributed his success to an upbringing filled with love and the work ethic of his parents. He graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School with a desire to provide for his family and to truly help people. He instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of always working hard to accomplish your goals. More than anything, he was a proud and loving husband, father and grandfather. He believed there is nothing more important than family. Thank you to all the wonderful staff at St. Joes for their care and compassion and to his friend Claudette who brought him joy in his last few months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made St. Joseph's Health Foundation and the Hamilton Academy of Medicine Foundation. Celebration of life will take place at a later date. I was so sorry to hear of Ange's passing. He was our doctor after I married my husband Don Dixon in 1967 and we moved for about 6 years and when we cam back to Hamilton, he took us back. We became really good friends and not just patients. He was such a wonderful man and was always so cheerful and kind. My husband and him had a very special relationship and Angelo along with his wonderful staff helped my husband so much when he became ill about 3 years ago. Sadly Don passed away almost 3 years now and I remember him saying to Ange that once he got better he would take him for chicken wings at the Association. Needless to say he did not make it and when I told my son about Ange's passing that is the first thing that he said to me "I hope they now both go for chicken wings up there" It brought me to uncontrollable tears. I will miss him so much. Our deepest condolences to the whole Zizzo family. Till we meet again Ange. Love Flora Dixon. xo

Thank you Dr Angelo for taking care of my health since 1969 -Made my 80th BD in March. Your care was second to none & I was fortunate to have good health with few issues. I Never thought you'd be with your Judy for our May appointment but God knows that where you most wanted to be. Sleep on and take your rest. You've left our world a better place with all your hard work helping others. May your family take comfort in knowing you are at peace. You flew home to Glory! Rest in Peace

The greatest gift that I ever received from anyone was the memorable hug I got from Ang for my tenth year to the day of my sobriety. Then he asked me for my advice and to educate him so that he could better understand how to treat others with the same disease. Humbling for both of us. Ang was more than a family physician., He was my friend whom I will miss . But I'm certain and confident his legacy will be preserved by Steven.

We were so deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Ang's passing. He became our family doctor 38 years ago and always was so caring, humble and thorough in his approach to our health concerns over the years. We also considered him a friend that we could confide in with complete confidence about anything. His positive and cheerful demeanor will be so greatly missed.
We would also like to extend our deepest sympathies to Rick and Karen and their family at this time.

Sincerely,
Al and Marilyn MacLean and family

Dr Angelo had been my doctor for over 42 years. He was a wonderful person, funny and caring and yes I always heard him wistle as he walked down the hall to the room I was waiting in. I always new I could talk to him about anything. A time when several friends would get together at Hamilton Place to see the Pops (musicals). I am very sad now that he is gone. My deepest condolences to the family and staff. R.I.P. I was also known by Ranalli, Fraser and now Cillis

Dr. Zizzo took such good care of my mom and dad, for many years, and helped us through their passing. All of my siblings, right down to my little grandchildren went to him. It was like he was part of our family.

I will miss his huge smile when he came into the room, and the chats we had about so many things. I think I've been seeing him for 40 years.

My heart goes out to his children and grandchildren who he spoke about so fondly.

He has left a huge void in the medical community.

Angelo's passing is a huge loss and an extremely sad day for me, our local neighbourhood, and our broader community. I had the pleasure of enjoying Angelo's presence, smiles, and casual chats, innumerable times over the past 32 years, when he and Judy would pass by our house during their frequent walks and find me as often as not working in the front yard or on my cars in the driveway. The powerful connection of love and commitment between them shone for all to see. After Judy passed away, the continuing void in Angelo's life was just as apparent.
He and I continued afterwards with our regular curbside chats when he would stop during his walks. When I was scheduled for very serious surgery in December, Angelo offered his positive assurances and support that all would be fine in the end. And he was right.
Many, many decades before meeting Angelo, I shared a connection to his family through his younger brothers, David, Richard and Chuck. We attended Hamilton's St. Ann's school and Cathedral Boys' High together in our youth, and we served jointly as altar boys at St. Anthony of Padua Church when Father Sardo and Father Mascari were the principal clergy of the parish.
To Angelo's family - all his brothers, and their families - we extend our deepest condolences. I knew Angelo to be a caring person of the highest integrity, both unique and irreplaceable in his own right, and his kind character and warm smile will always be remembered and he will be missed.
