Barbara Teal Obituary

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Dr. Barbara Teal (Barbara Ann Teal-Anderson ) on Wednesday Feb 15th, 2023 at the age of 65 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Barb did not let her cancer diagnosis slow her down. She maintained a positive attitude throughout her illness and showed more concern for others than for herself. She maintained her wit and humour throughout.

Barb is survived by her husband of 36 wonderful years, Dale, their daughter Sally and son Brent, sister Susie and brothers Jeff (Mary) and Steve (Natalie) along with nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Bernard and mother Audrey.

Barb was born in Hamilton, Ontario and grew up in Ancaster. She received her undergraduate degree from Western University and then completed her Medical Degree at McMaster University, ultimately practicing Family Medicine for over 30 years and was kind and compassionate and provided excellent patient care. She began practicing in Cambridge and upon marriage relocated to Thunder Bay where Barb and Dale's two children were born. In 1994 Barb and Dale returned to Ancaster enjoying time between Ancaster, Collingwood, and boating on Georgian Bay. Professionally, Barb was a pioneer in advancing electronic medical records and Digital Health solutions and embracing Health Apps to better support patient care. She was an advisor on Provincial, National and vendor boards and committees and presented at national and international digital health conferences often in tandem with Dale as their careers often intermingled.

Barb was very active in various sports such as hockey, baseball, skiing, tennis, squash, windsurfing, sailing, boating) and played in many leagues over her entire life including Ancaster Ladies 3 Pitch league and Dofasco Women's Hockey League, She was a volunteer with Special Olympics Alpine skiing and also was an assistant minor hockey coach for many years. Barb was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking and knitting. She traveled as much as possible. Boating was her happy place but she was also very experienced having boated for most her life. She had a great sense of humour and most importantly she was a wonderful wife and mother.

Barb will be missed for her sense of humour, her compassion, and her positive attitude. For Sally, Barb was her key advocate, hockey and baseball teammate, and family game night opponent. For Brent, she was his chief copywriter for speeches, travel buddy, pen-pal, and the one always texting 'it's your mother, just checking in'. Barb was insistent that we keep on exploring, traveling, and having fun, and we know she'll be right there with us in spirit.

A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Barbara to any of these options; Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice, Events for Life, Juravinski Cancer Centre Special Olympics Ontario or T.E.A.D. My deepest sympathies to Barb´s family, friends and all whom she touched over her short but impactful years. I never met her personally but through my receptionist and her best friend, it´s always been clear to me this was a very special woman who touched thousands. I recently lost my own sweet mother to ovarian cancer and they have many similarities. God needed his top angels back for some reason. Until we meet again may she feel close to Dale, Brent and Sally´s (and all who loved her) hearts forever! God bless her beautiful soul and May she now rejoice in paradise for an eternity.

I went to Western with Barb and she helped me to get a House Senior position at the residence. She was always energetic, kind, happy and she loved her siblings and parents so much, always happy to talk about them and loved her time with them. Her practise was across from my Dr. She was taken too soon but I am sure she enriched the lives of so many!

I was sad and shocked to see this obit yesterday. Condolences to the family. Dr. Teal was my dr. from the time that she and Dr. Ireland opened a practise...long time.Lately, I had been wondering how I could thank her for finding a replacement doctor when she left. With our shortage of doctors that was a huge, caring thing to do. I still miss her.

My deepest condolences. I have worked with Barbara for many years at OntarioMD and have always had the utmost respect for her. She helped so many physicians use technology better in their offices and really made an impact. I recall emailing her last year and she was excited for her retirement. I was trying to convince her to continue doing webinars with us. This is a great loss both personally and for our profession.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Dr. Teal was my family physician for a number of years, until she retired from her practice. When I attended appointments with Dr. Teal, I felt like I was catching up with a friend. She was easy to talk with, thorough in her care, and always willing to have a conversation about health matters. She was an exceptional family physician.

Sincerely,
Catherine
