Carrol HERAUF Obituary

November 30, 1941 - December 25, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Carrol on Christmas day, after a 14-month challenging journey with breast cancer. As she wished, she died peacefully at home surrounded by her husband, children with their spouses and grandchildren. She leaves behind her loving husband of 58 years, Herbert. Loving mother to son Thomas (Christina) and daughter Barbara (Pat) Consoli. Beloved grandmother to Eric Herauf and Cayla and Caroline Consoli and step grandchildren Alex and Carissa Consoli. Predeceased by her parents Alexander and Catherine Ehman and parents-in-law Simon and Caroline Herauf, and stepmother Agatha Herauf. Sadly, survived by sisters Dolores Reid, Jeannette Krivuzoff and Deanna (Andrew) Magoski and sisters-in-law Loraine and Sheila Ehman. Predeceased by brothers Alexander and Gerry Ehman and sister Madeline (Allyre) Sirois. Dearly missed by brothers-in-law Wilfred, Peter, Bob (Helen) and Darrell Herauf and sisters-in-law Celine Jamieson, Teresa Higgins, and Darlene Herauf and Doris (spouse of deceased brother-in-law Don). Predeceased by brother-in-law Cyril and sisters-in-law Kay (Tony) Fahlman, Loretta Johnston, Louise (Ted) Galecki and Angela Pulham. Survived by special and loved niece Valerie Sirois and close friend Yvonne Sutton in Australia. Carrol is loved by and fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.
Carrol was born in Cudworth, Saskatchewan where her father had a law practice. After he died in 1950, at the young age of 52, the task of raising the four youngest children fell on the shoulders of her mother. While working part time to help support the family, Carrol attended and graduated from Sion Academy High School in Saskatoon. After graduating from Saskatoon Teachers College, the following year she started teaching at the primary level in Saskatoon. She continued this teaching until her marriage to Herbert in 1964 in Saskatoon. After Herb's five years of study and teaching at the University of Michigan they moved to Ontario in 1971 where Carrol volunteered for various organizations and was an avid supporter of her son's hockey teams. Carrol continued in education while her children grew up by occasional supply teaching in Dundas and Hamilton. In 1987, through a volunteer job, she found her real work love, teaching E. S. L. (English as a Second Language). In 1989, she accepted a part-time position to teach E.S.L., then taught full-time until she retired in 2005 to be a full-time grandma to her three grandchildren. She, somewhat reluctantly at times, participated in the many camping trips her family took. An incentive was to promise to take a good supply of white wine. Many trips to Florida, special trips to Australia, and three trips to Europe were special times shared with family members and their spouses' relatives in Germany, Austria, Italy and Ukraine. The Blue Jays and Raptors lost a special fan, rarely missing watching a game during her Covid and cancer journey. Walking and exercising, working on crafts and doing crossword puzzles were a big part of her life until the later stages of her cancer journey. She loved the family dog, Brandy, for 18 years but vowed to not get another one after he passed. She loved visits from her granddogs Ollie, Vuarnet and Oakley. Visitation at Circle of Life Cremation and Burial Center, 100 King St. East, Dundas (905-628-8558) on Thursday, January 5, 2023, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with prayers at 8 p.m. (additional parking at the Air Force Club). Dear Mr Herauf, Tom, Barb and family,
We were all so saddened to hear of beautiful Mrs Herauf´s passing snd send all our love and prayers to you at this very sad time. She will be greatly missed.
We have known Mrs Herauf and the family for a very long time- they were our first family friends when we moved to Dundas from Australia.
Our first encounter with The Heraufs was when I started kindergarten with Barbie. On one of my first days I sat beside Barbie on the bus and told her we lived in the north pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge! Very shortly afterwards the whole family was invited to dinner at their place- That was the beginning of a very special friendship.
Growing up, the Heraufs were like family to us. All our family lived overseas and the Heraufs´ family lived out west so we celebrated together - many Christmases, Easters, Thanksgivings, birthdays, Australia Days and more.
I could not venture to imagine how many roast dinners Mrs Herauf cooked for us, how many photos we have taken around their dining room or around ours , together.
We have Mrs Herauf to thank for our chocolate chip cookie, puffed wheat and the fluffy cookie icing recipes- all of which I make with my kids now. I loved how she used to bring us in bowls of popcorn or that homemade pretzel, peanut mix while we watched tv. I loved watching her make bread and both mum and her canning fruit after a big harvest. I loved how she was such a good sport and dressed up as a fortune teller for our MD Carnivals! I´ll never forget her face when she tried Vegemite for the first time when I brought it over for a sleepover and the look of amazement when I happily ate it!
I remember when she came in to St Bernadette´s to teach our class when our teacher was sick. She was always firm but friendly and no one ever played up for herI She also helped out with Officer Ron´s bike safely day and kindly supported us as we rode through obstacles courses.
I loved her super tidy house and I can still hear her say `Herbert´ when Mr Herauf had done something in jest that she didn´t approve of .
I loved the close friendship she had with my mum. I loved the´Miffies´ ( pull on slipper socks) she made for all of us to keep our feet warm in winter - my mum still has hers. I loved how we went to the Old Mill for brunch or Tim Horton´s after church and I loved her laugh. I loved that I could invite them to our house when they came to visit to return their hospitality. I remember seeing the glow of enthusiasm and passion as Mrs Herauf told us about her work with the ESL students and thinking how fortunate they were to have such a caring, talented teacher as Mrs Herauf was.
It is very difficult to imagine a world without her. But we have a lifetime of memories that i feel so fortunate to have.
Thank you for you kindness and generosity.
We will miss you dearly and wish we were closer.
We are all sending lots of love and prayers to all of you from the other side of the world.
Love always,
Yvonne, Dianne,( Scott, Riley, Alannah, Ammelia), Caroline ( Rob, Beatrice, Edward), Joanne ( Byron, Bernadette, Xavier) xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
