Christopher Barlow Obituary

Passed peacefully on November 22, 2022, at the Juravinski Hospital following a cancer recurrence. Christopher was born in England on December 1, 1929, to Wing Commander Sir Richard Barlow and Rosamund Anderton. In 1946, just prior to his graduation from Eton College, Christopher lost his father in an airplane crash in Ecuador. Upon his father's death he became the 7th Baronet of Fort William, Bengal. At age 17 he enrolled at McGill University where he completed an engineering degree specializing in architecture while working summers in forestry and on Great Lakes steamers. He met and married Jacqueline Audley in Montreal in 1952. Three children followed in 1953, 1958 and 1960. A burgeoning career as an architect lead to a move to Newfoundland in 1966 where he was the lead designer of many public projects including hospitals, trade schools, airports, and university buildings. He had a great love of sailing and enjoyed many adventures while crewing with friends. He also loved travelling and walking. His wife Jacqueline died in 2002. In 2003 he married Jeane Gage to whom he was devoted. Christopher and Jeane enjoyed 18 happy years together until her death on November 21, 2021. Christopher possessed a lively and keen intelligence and a quick wit. He kept himself well informed to the end. Christopher was an avid gardener and the family look forward to seeing the blooms of the 110 daffodils bulbs he planted just before he died. Christopher leaves his children Persephone (Robert), Crispian (Christi) and Caroline (James), his granddaughters Muffy (Neil), Sophie (Matthew), and Jennifer (Darryl), his great-grandson Albert, his brother Anthony, his sister Lucinda and his stepchildren George, Brian, and Margaret Gage. He was looking forward to welcoming a second great-grandchild due later this month. He was predeceased by his brother David. A private memorial service will be convened at a later date when the family can congregate.

My condolences to the family. I would be remiss if I didn't pass on some thoughts. Crispian was a year ahead of me at St. Bon's. Chris was my mentor at an early age as architecture student. I did two work terms and worked for a short while after graduation with him. He did have a quick wit and his dry and sometimes sarcastic sense of humor was sometimes mistaken as critique when it as only a joke. We grew together as colleagues and shared many a rum and coke at various events. He was a seminal influence on me as an architect. He was an engineers architect and I appreciated his depth of understanding and argumentative ways when confronted by a lazy or 'Oh that's good enough' attitude of some buildings engineers were out-calculated by him to prove his point about mechanical duct sized and depth of beams. He was very kind to most everyone and suffered fools lightly but diplomatically. I refer to him often and recite stories from 40+ years ago. I am sorry to hear he has passed but he will be fondly remembered.
