Christopher Cutler Obituary

On Monday, February 7, 2022, Christopher "Chris" Benjamin Cutler of Hamilton suddenly passed away in his 62nd year. Loving son of Alan and the late Edna Cutler. Beloved husband of Lan. Dear brother of Kim O'Rourke (Paul) of St. Catharines and Amanda Thornton (Jim) of Brantford. Loving uncle of Erin, Jacqueline, Oceania (Korey), Daniel, Keaton and Callen. Also survived by his aunt Janet and cousins in England and many family and friends who will truly miss him. Chris, an advisor to Mayor Fred Eisenberger, had a great love for the City of Hamilton. He was deeply committed to supporting a diversity of causes within his community and beyond. He was a strong advocate for peace and human kindness. He loved to travel, read, spend quality time with his family and held a strong passion for the French language and culture. He cherished his daily walks through the city and enjoyed his time at the Hamilton Farmer's Market. Chris was a friend to all. He was a prominent and active member of many clubs and associations including: the Rotary Club, where he was the President of the Rotary Club of Hamilton in 2013; the Canadian Club of Hamilton where he also served as President; the St. Leonard's Society of Canada where he was the Chair of the Hamilton branch; the Canadian Peace Initiative where he was a National Co-Chair; as well as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. He served as City Councillor for the Town of Flamborough, was a Paul Harris Fellow and a recipient of the YMCA Peace Medal. He has no doubt left a lasting impact. Due to COVID restrictions the family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date. In his memory, donations to the Rotary Club of Hamilton Forever Fund and YMCA of Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford would be appreciated by the family.

He left a true legacy. He deeply cared for others and treated all with dignity.
I taught at Parkview Secondary in 2010 and at that time he was the CEO of PATH Career Services. He went above and beyond for our students. He helped several of them with learning differences and various disabilities start looking for work after high school.
In addition, on a personal note, he was an important mentor to me at YMCA Careerworx in 2000 when I ventured out into the world of work after university. He taught me job search and leadership skills by example which will serve me the rest of my life. He really cared for his fellow citizens. He will greatly be missed.

My deepest condolences to Chris´s family, friends and colleagues. I first met Chris in around 1980 when we both had summer jobs working at the Dundas Star Journal newspaper, and was always pleased to run into him at various functions around town over the years. I remember Chris as a very positive and social person, who could also be a bit mischievous - but always in a fun and playful way. Chris, Hamilton will miss you.

Chris Cutler was everyone´s friend in Hamilton - always cheerful, smiling and helpful to anyone who needed his help. He was a true friend and supporter of Gandhi Peace Festival. Whenever we needed something done at the City Hall, we approached Chris and he always obliged. He addressed Gandhi Peace Festival a couple of times, always joined the Peace Marches and showed great enthusiasm in making Hamilton a City of Peace. He played a key role in establishing the Peace Garden behind the City Hall and in installing the Gandhi statue in the City Hall gardens. He was awarded the Community Service Award by Gandhi Peace Festival. We will all miss Chris dearly. He is an enormous loss for the City of Hamilton. He was a true gentleman!

I count myself as fortunate to have know Christopher as both a good friend and a mentor. I've never met anyone who wasn't blessed with Christopher's kindness. He inspired us all to be better versions of ourselves. He guided SLSH through some of our hardest years. Christopher was a leader in the Rotary Club of Hamilton as both a Past President and long time board member. In the game of life you wanted Christopher on your team. And he was!

My sincere condolences to Chris' family and friends. Chris was a major supporter of Westfield since the early 1980's. As a volunteer; Coalition supporter; Councilor (working to get Westfield reopened); Hamilton Conservation Authority Board member; Rotarian supporter of Telling Tales and a positive Westfield influencer through his work and community efforts. It is a tragic loss for so many and for the community. He will always be remembered at Westfield. Chris was a great colleague and friend.
