Daniel Nathanson Obituary

On Sunday, July 10, Daniel Victor Nathanson returned home to his Heavenly Father at age 87, after a full life of many challenges and unusual opportunities. He relied on his faith in Jesus from an early age, and was never disappointed with the guidance he was given.

After graduating from McMaster with a BA in Arts in 1958, he went on to receive his BD from Victoria University, University of Toronto in 1962. Married that year to his beloved wife and life partner, Joan, he completed his Master's in Social Work at McGill University before returning to the Hamilton area as a senior case worker at the Family Service Bureau. Their first son, Peter, arrived in 1964, followed closely by John in 1965 and Andrew in 1968. Daughter Janine completed the family in 1969. Providing for his family's needs was a major concern.

In 1971, he resigned as Director of the Oakville Family Service Agency to begin his medical studies at McMaster. On graduation in 1974, he chose to specialize in Psychiatry, completing his course in 1979. From then until 2005, he practised mostly in Hamilton, combining various part-time hospital appointments with an ongoing general practice. He loved helping his patients better understand their difficulties and find ways to overcome them or manage them more successfully.

During these years, he served as an undergraduate tutorial leader in internal medicine as well as tutoring residents in psychiatry. He also served for some 20 years as a peer assessor for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Following retirement in 2005, he faced a number of personal medical challenges. He and the family are grateful for the extra years of life resulting from excellent care. Many thanks to Family Physician Ian Metcalfe, Cardiologist Michael Sullivan, the Kidney Care team at St. Joe's, and over the past 20 months, the Dialysis Team at the King St. Clinic under Dr. Carlisle. VON nurses and more recently Bayshore nurses under Dr. Mayer provided home foot wound care. Nader Tadros and his wife, Barbara, of San Rafael Pharmacy have been exemplary in their service.

The extra time on dialysis allowed Daniel to review his life and appreciate anew many special people who offered a kind word of encouragement, introduced him to 19th century novels by Dickens, Hugo, Tolstoy, Turgenev, and Dostoevsky, insisted that he had the ability to handle university studies, modelled kind and respectful ways of interacting with those who had to deal with mental illnesses - Daniel was so thankful for these supports.

He also appreciated special travel experiences, highlights being the Hagia Sofia cathedral built by Justinian in Constantinople; Carcassonne, Montsegur, Le Chambon-sur-Lignon in France; Dachau in Germany; a cruise down the Danube from Vienna to the Black Sea; Guatemala, Mexico and Cuba; the Canadian Arctic and the coastal waters of BC up to Alaska and the famous Chilcoot Trail to Yukon gold.

Daniel is survived by his wife, Joan; sons Peter De New (Margaret Wilding), John de New (Sonja de New) and daughter Janine Presutti (Rob Rombout). Grandchildren include Kiri and Patrick De New, Jascha and Kolya Haisken-De New, and Maya Presutti. Daniel is also survived by two sisters, Gloria and Jackie.

Family support in these last few difficult years has been deeply appreciated. At Daniel's request, there will be no public visitation or service. Daniel's ashes will be scattered by the family with those of his beloved son, Andrew who died in 2007.

Condolences for the family may mailed to Circle of Life, 100 King St. E, Dundas, ON, L9H 1C4.

Memorial donations would be welcomed by the family. Some of Daniel's favourite charities include: UNICEF, PLAN Canada, Kids Help Phone, UNHCR (refugee aid), and St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation: Kidney Dialysis Program.¬
