David Jackson Obituary

David Phillip Jackson (B.Sc., M.A., M.A.Sc., Dip.Eng.Mgt., M.Eng.Mgt, Ph.D.) passed away at home in his 82nd year with his beloved wife Susan by his side. He will be deeply missed by: his children Scott (Morgan) Jackson of Seattle and Timothy (Laura) Jackson of Toronto; grandson Carter Jackson; brother Roy (Susan) Jackson; and nephews Chris and James Jackson.

Dave was a devoted husband and father who always put his family first. However, many would fondly remember him for his wonderful sense of humour, passion for learning and life work as a world-renowned engineering physicist. Dave spent 27 years working at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories prior to becoming a full-time professor of Engineering Physics at McMaster University in Hamilton.

Dave attended the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies from 1964-1966. He later became director of Canada's National Fusion Program and president of the Canadian Nuclear Society. He co-authored several books (including Half Lives: A Guide to Nuclear Technology in Canada and Unlocking the Atom). He also wrote a popular industry blog.
Dave was also very proud to have served in the Canadian Navy as a lieutenant.

Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held to celebrate his life. His final resting place will be Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto with his parents (predeceased) and cherished dog, Roamer.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army (one of his favourite charities).

I was very saddened to hear of Dave's passing.
Many decades have gone by since we were close Navy buddies in the UNTD. Living on opposites sides of the country we disconnected, but I have often remembered
the great times we spent together then. I smile when I see us taking daily readings on the "hand inclinometer" to register if we were having a thumbs up day or not as he joined me for lunch in HMCS Naden wardroom for lunch after a morning for me teaching at the Navigation school while he pursued the beginnings of an illustrious career at the Pacific Naval Lab. For me it was a brief but important relationship and I will never forget him.
May I extend my condolences to all his family.

My condolences to Sue and family. Dave and I were office neighbours at CRNL for 12 years, and I always enjoyed our chats concerning both physics and life. We both grew up in Toronto, and both received our BASc degrees in Eng. Physics at U of T, so we shared many things from our past. So sorry for the loss.

I loved Dave's quirky sense of humour. We often had a good gab and laugh standing in the street as he was being taken for a walk by Roamer. As one so accomplished, his stance was never anything but down to earth and self- effacing. Both Catherine and I will miss the duo of Dave and Susan as neighbours. Our hearts are of course with Susan as she begins this next chapter in her life. So long Dave, you were a good man and such an accomplished one to boot. It was our privilege to have known you. The earth is lessened in your absence.
