Deloris WEDEMIRE Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and Nana Deloris Samuels at our home in Hamilton, on Friday, February 3, 2023, at the age of 90 years. She was born in the district of Rose Hill, St James, Jamaica on April 1, 1932, to Norman Samuels and Annie Samuels and was married to the late Cleveland Wedemire. Loving mother of Lensworth Wallace (Jamaica) Veronica Myrie, Evelyn Myrie, Verla McAdam, Pansy McAdam, and Cleopatra McAdam, Dahlia Myrie (late) Pauline Myrie (late). Cherished grandma to Philip, Richard, Colin, Kevin, Keith, Nadine, Delroy, Afiya (Mohammadou), Patrick, Kimeka, Omar, Aisha, Kimani, Nicola, Tresha, Greg, Jennelle (late) Sasha, Jessica, and great nana to 20 and great-great-nana to one. She was sister to Alice Sterling, Rhoan Stennett, Doreen, Sandy, Renvil, Kenhill, Jennifer, Despy, Hermine (late) and Leslie Samuels (late). A member of Sandwich First Baptist Church and Windsor West Indian Association, Deloris enjoyed sewing, home decorating, doing word puzzles and playing dominoes in her past time. Deloris came to Canada in 1970 under the Foreign Domestic Worker Program- one of the few channels opened to Black people to enter Canada at that time. She worked for many years at the Holiday Inn in Windsor. From her small income, she saved enough and soon brought her children to join her in Canada. A devoted mother and cherished grandmother and nana, Deloris gave her all to her family whom she loved dearly. A heartfelt thanks to staff at Hamilton Health Sciences, especially to her Oncologist Dr. Waldo Jimenez, and Dr. Danielle O'Toole, and her team. Our deep appreciation goes to the PSW's and nurses who came to our home for all their compassionate, loving care given to Deloris during her final journey. Deloris will be sorely missed by her loving family in Jamaica, United States, UK and Canada. Visitation at Bay Gardens Funeral Home - "William J. Markey Chapel", 947 Rymal Road East, HAMILTON (905-574-0405) on Friday, February 10th from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 pm. Additional Visitation and a Service for Deloris will be held in Windsor at a later date. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Oldcastle, ON. For those who wish, memorial donations made to the Afro Canadian Caribbean Association (Seniors Program) would be appreciated. Please sign the online Book of Condolences at www.baygardens.ca

Dear Evelyn, I never knew your Mom but if she was anything like you she must have been a formidable and wonderful woman. I´m in Ottawa for an Equity conference now or I´d be there. I will hold your Mom in the light as I continue the work that she and all our West Indian parents who paved the way for us in the `60s and 70s began. Her great light lives in you and all her children, grandchildren and those she and you have touched.
