Denise GLOSTER Obituary

(née Marie Thérèse Elisabeth Denise Guay)
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Denise at the age of 78.
Loving wife of husband Neil for 55 years. Proud mom to son Jason (Tania) and daughter Kyra (Alasdair), and grandchildren Jack, Tessa, Keaghan and Ailish. Survived by siblings Pierre, Claire, Louise and Benoit, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father Gérard Guay, mother Berthe Simard, and brother Michel.
Denise was born in Québec City, moving to Ontario for an internship at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto as a dietician in training at Laval University. It is in Toronto that she met her future husband Neil, at which time she spoke very little English, and Neil even less French. After getting married and settling down in Toronto, and later Dundas, Denise worked as a dietician. In 1980 she and Neil opened a health food store in Dundas, The Horn of Plenty. They retired in 2005, passing the reins to son Jason. In her retirement she enjoyed travelling around the world, and across the country by motorhome. While out for walks she enjoyed spotting wildlife at the local pond. She began exhibiting signs of dementia in the last few years.
Denise always seemed to be smiling, and will be remembered for her kindness and her gourmet meals.
Special thanks to the Hamilton Police and everyone who assisted in the search for Denise. We will be forever grateful.
A drop-in Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, November 21 from 12-4 p.m. at the Dundas Museum, 139 Park Street West, Dundas, Ontario. Proof of Covid-19 double vaccination is required to attend.
In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada or to the Hamilton Conservation Foundation.

It is with great sadness I learn of Denise's passing. My heart breaks for Neil and Jason during this very troubling time. I have so many fond memories of Neil and Denise at our meetings. So many stories, so many great memories.

Our first meeting was in a broom closet in Ottawa at a natural food show. She was so compassionate and never wanted to hurt another supplier's feeling. So she and Neil would only agree to meet with me in a broom closet so no one would see us together. We later met in their suite and discuss how I could help them. Yet it was they that changed my life forever.

She was my guiding light and she was my weather vane. I would blow ideas past her and she would point me in the direction I needed to go. Her and Neil were one of the key reasons Health First was created. They believed strongly that 'None of us was as smart of all of us!' They encouraged me and guided me. I will be forever grateful.

Denise was kind and knowledgeable. Considerate and profound. She was solid and loyal. When she got something in her mind she was unstoppable. She made me unstoppable. She made the Network unstoppable.

Denise put others first before herself! Selfless and dedicated! Leading by actions and without need for recognition. She worked in the shadows but her smile brought light to the outcomes. Her comments were quiet but her words echoed throughout the group. I am so grateful for my moments with her. She proved to me it was not the quantity of time you spend with someone but rather the quality of the time you have that matters.

With her gone the world is not right and will never be the same. The world has lost a loving soul. I hope she knew how much she changed the world by being just who she was, Denise of Horn Of Plenty and founding member of Health First and a wonderful friend.

Neil, Kyra and Jason,

Denise, like all of you, was an important part of my childhood and young adult life. I carry many fond memories of our shared family outings. It was wonderful to have such positive people as our back fence neighbours. I was grateful to be part of evolution of the Horn of Plenty. Denise was a role model for me in my own path through the Natural Food and retail world. I remember her as a problem solver, entrepreneur, adventurer, and joyful woman. I am grateful that Denise was apart of my life and she will live long in my memories. Joy and peace to to the family.

Our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Denise. We are so sorry for the loss that is being felt for someone who touched the lives of so many through her decades of service supporting the health of others. Denise and Neil were one of the original Members of Health First, and while she may have left the business in 2005 she will be dearly missed by all her friends and family at Health First Network. Our love and best wished to the Gloster family.
