Donald MACDONALD Obituary

Died very peacefully at Canterbury Gardens, Peterborough, Ontario with his daughters Mary and Lynda by his side on July 9, 2022 at the age of 90. Born in Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan, Don is predeceased by his loving wife of 58 yrs, Sheila; lovingly remembered by his daughters Mary Blair (Greg) of Peterborough, Ontario and Lynda Keith (Drew) of Stouffville, Ontario, as well as grandchildren Jessie, Laura, William and Elizabeth. Don is also survived by many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Ontario. Don is predeceased by his father Donald MacDonald and mother Laura Gemmill MacDonald, and brother Neil MacDonald (Muriel).

Don was born on August 16th, 1931 and raised on the OXO Cattle Ranch near the hamlet of Bapaume, Saskatchewan and educated at OXO Primary School (named after the brand of the Ranch). At the age of 14, Don left the ranch due to acute asthma; completing his education at Albert Public School and Nutana Collegiate Institute in Saskatoon.

In 1949, Don joined the Hudson's Bay Company, taking a 6-month leave of absence to acquire a commission in the Canadian Army. He met Sheila in Winnipeg while working for HBC. They married in 1960 and honeymooned East to Ontario where Don joined Smith Manufacturing, followed by Allied Chemical C.L., W.R. Grace Canada and Thiokol Fibres Canada. In 1973. Don and Sheila acquired a Canadian Tire franchise in Deep River, Ontario and in 1979 a Canadian Tire franchise in Grand Falls, Newfoundland and Labrador. In 1980, moving back to Ontario Don and Sheila founded Microwire Products, retiring & selling the business in 1993.

Don and Sheila bought their first home in Lorne Park, Ontario; home of the infamous Woodeden Wanderers. Following business interests, the family moved to Burlington, Ontario, Deep River, Ontario, Grand Falls, Newfoundland & Labrador, Prince Edward County, Ontario and landing in Grimsby, Ontario where they remained for 32 years until moving to Peterborough in 2015.

Don's dedication to family and friends was unparalleled. His genuine interest in the lives of those around him was exemplified by the many wonderful friends he amassed over his years and the many volunteer roles he took on; including but not limited to Rotary (1975-2015), Lincoln Community Care, founding member of Probus in Grimsby, West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Board of Directors and Albright Manor Board of Directors. Don was an avid golfer, curler and an extremely "generous" poker player.

Mary and Lynda would like to thank the incredible staff at Canterbury Gardens for their service, love, support and friendship given to their dad, mom and their families while at Canterbury.

A private celebration will take place at a later date.
