With great sadness, we share the news of the peaceful passing of Donald at Joseph Brant Hospital on August 28th, 2021, at the age of 88. There are so many lives that he touched in such a positive way.
Don was a loving father to his son Jeffrey, daughter Julie and her partner Dave, and devoted grandfather to Claire. They will miss profoundly his kind and gentle words, compassionate understanding, sparkling sense of humour, and steadfast presence, that were always generously given. He celebrated fifty years of marriage with his late beloved wife Rosemary Mann (Tyrrill), and cherished family life at their home in Burlington and at the cottage in Muskoka. His later life was enriched by the companionship of his loving partner, Joan Mary Booth. He was a loyal brother to Doris Seeley (Mann) and brother-in-law to Paul Seeley, and to Ann (Tyrrill) and Don Mills, who predeceased him. He is remembered fondly by his nieces and nephews and their children.
Don led a vibrant and full life. He was very active in the Hamilton and Burlington communities and enjoyed a distinguished career as a lawyer and senior partner at Ross & McBride. He was respected and revered by his colleagues and his numerous clients, and was appointed Queen's Counsel, for his insightful and innovative legal work. His amiable manner and heartfelt interest in people made him a trusted friend and valued ally to many.
He was deeply engaged in charitable and civic endeavours, serving as the President of the Rotary Club of Hamilton and Board Chair of CAA South-Central Ontario, and was involved with many other diverse organizations. Don enjoyed spending time with friends, whether it was playing bridge, golfing, skiing, traveling, or entertaining with his great talent on the piano. He treasured memories of his time spent in Florida and his annual trips to Manitoulin Island.
Don left an impact on all who met him. He was thoughtful, witty, and people truly enjoyed his company. His interactions were imbued with grace and wisdom. Don will be remembered fondly and dearly missed. A service will be held at Smith's Funeral Home (1167 Guelph Line, Burlington), on Sunday, September 12th at 1:30 pm.
