1932-2021
Dorothy's earnest prayer was that when the time came for her to exit this world, she would
die peacefully in her sleep, and she would not be alone. Well, on Sunday, November 21,
2021, her prayer was answered. How does one capture the essence of Dorothy? To her family, she could be likened to a fierce lioness poised to fight to the death if that meant protecting them from real or perceived harm. She made them feel loved, nurtured and safe. She made them feel as though they were number one in her life, because they were. To her friends, Dorothy was loyal, trustworthy and fun. She chose to focus on the good in others and was ever ready to lend an ear, a helping hand, or to impart words of wisdom. In short, Dorothy was "a special lady" who was always, always determined to do things her way! Dorothy embodied the pioneering spirit: resilience, courage, vision, and gratitude. From her birthplace of Jakarta, Indonesia, where she spent two years in a Japanese POW camp together with her father, she sailed to Amsterdam, Holland to sojourn for 12 years. In 1959, she gathered her family and set off for Canada. Once settled, she studied hair styling and opened two successful hair salons. Many of her clients became lifelong friends. She also played a decent round of golf. Dorothy was indeed a self-made woman. Dorothy was also a woman of faith. She believed in her heart of hearts that there was more to her being than what meets the eye. She had peace in the knowledge of "our blessed hope", understanding that at the appointed time, we will all meet again in eternity. (So be of good cheer, one day you will see her again!). Dorothy is survived by her three daughters: Sharyde (Michael), Seraya (Kent) and Aida (Gary); her beloved Errol and his children Lisa, Jason and Davin; grandchildren: Lauren, Nicole, Matthew, David, Shai, Dylan, Christian and Stephen, and great-grandchildren: Robert, Persephone, William, Andrew and Ashlyn. A special thank you to the attentive and compassionate C Ward Team and Palliative Team at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital; Dr. DePetrillo for your heartfelt concern, years of care and enduring words of comfort; the awesome staff and residents at Maple Crest Village, and to her dear friends who demonstrated their deep love for her with unfailing acts of kindness. Truly, we thank God for all of you! Dorothy will rest at Queen's Lawn Cemetery, Grimsby, Ontario. Please understand that there will not be a formal funeral or visitation. There will be a grave site burial attended by immediate family only. If you wish to make a donation on Dorothy's behalf, please consider West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation. They are currently working to raise funds for new equipment as well as the development of their new hospital. 905-945-9564.
