Douglas dePass Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Douglas Edward dePass on April 10, 2020. Born in Hamilton, he was the eldest son of Edward and Lena dePass. He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn (Clarke) whom he shared 48 years of love and laughter. He leaves behind his sons Scott, and Michael (Leigh Wilson); grandchildren Sam and Clara; brother Jim (Marie) dePass, all of Hamilton and brother-in-law Bill (Kaye) Clarke of Brantford as well as nieces and a nephew. For 34 years Doug taught with the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board. Students will remember "Sir" and his corny sense of humour. In addition to his love of teaching, Douglas also enjoyed being part of The Hamilton Men Teachers' Choir and later the Albertones Choir in Ancaster. Always willing to help where he could, he took great pride in his volunteering with Ronald McDonald House as well as being an active member of St. Andrew's United Church in Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. A private family service will take place with a celebration of life to follow, at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to M.A. Clark & Sons Funeral Home (905)-383-3323.

I am really sorry to be seeing this just today. My heartfelt condolences to 'Sir's' family. I loved having him as my teacher in Riddell. I like to think I was one of his favorite students. But then again, I am sure he made everyone feel that way. Mr. DePass really cared about our education, and us, as people. When I am asked which teachers in my life influenced me the most, 'Sir' was one of them, without a second thought. My father was also a teacher , here, in Hamilton and also passed away last April 5th. When I read words from former students, it comforted me greatly. I hope my thoughts, and good memories of Mr. DePass will comfort you all the same way. That's me (blue dress right in front of him) in the photo I attached. Hugs!

Doug was one of the first members of the past OPSMTF to introduce himself to me when I joined the Bd. of Ed. in 1970. A very welcoming, selfless and humorous guy, always finding the best and positive in every situation and person. Had the pleasure of teaching with him at Riddell and Armstrong schools and had great times with him in and out of classes. Always admired joy he got passing on his knowledge and skills to students, especially those who were the most challenging, treating all with respect and kindness. Pleased to have privilege of his friendship for decades. I will miss him.

Catherine and I were very saddened by the news of Doug's passing. Taught with him for several years at Riddell, remember him leading the Carol singing at Christmas. I was glad to have had a chance to reconnect with him at the reunion a few years back. Our deepest sympathies to you and your family Marilyn.

Mr. DePass was my shop teacher at RA Riddell in Hamilton Ontario. He had such an impact on my life back in the 80s all the way up to now and was the inspiration for me to take up metal cnc as a hobby. He was one of my top 3 favorite teachers throughout my whole educational career and I was so pleased to see him again at our school reunion. Sir, you will be missed and always respected. Thank you for the great childhood memories!!

Mr DePass was not only my home room teacher at Riddell but he was my favourite teacher. He told funny jokes and loved it when you rolled your eyes at them. I used to run into him even as an adult and it was always a friendly conversation and much teasing. I had a rough childhood and Mr DePass contributed to my great memories. He will be missed. I'm so sorry for your families loss.
