Ernst Roth Obituary

Ernie Roth lived a life of adventure. Born August 14, 1929, in Switzerland, he lived and went to school in Wil, apprenticing as a wood pattern maker at Sulzer in Winterthur. He continued his career in wood pattern making in Canada, retiring from Dominion Pattern Works in 1990. He loved to travel and loved the outdoors. Growing up close to the Alps led him to develop a passion for the mountains, and in his younger years he became an avid mountain climber. His travels led to stints working in both Sweden and South Africa. It was in South Africa that he met Cecilia, who would become his lifelong friend and partner for 66 years. They would raise three daughters together in Burlington, Ontario: Heidi (husband Bob Scarfone), Helen (husband Randy Remigis), and Janet Shoreman (predeceased, 1990). Their family grew to include 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Ernie will be missed by his sister in Switzerland, Heidi Beeler. Ernie's love for the outdoors continued throughout his life. He enjoyed camping, fishing, cycling, kayaking, cross country skiing and hiking, and shared these passions with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Ernie was one of the four founding members of the Halton Outdoor Club, teaching cross country skiing and coaching young people in competitive skiing and training 4 skiers to enter the Olympics. He also enjoyed participating in cross country ski races, once completing a 100 km Masters race. One of his most prized accomplishments was setting up cross country ski trips in the winter and hiking trips in the fall to Dobiacco, Italy. They began in 2003 and continue to this day. He was 85 when he went on his last trip. Ernie was also an avid reader and woodworker. His many wood creations included beautifully crafted ukuleles created from the wood that he collected from his land at Grey Bruce County. He enjoyed strumming tunes out on those ukuleles. Ernie passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 13, 2023, at the age of 93. He will be greatly missed as he moves on to his next adventure. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude for the care and compassion given to Ernie by the paramedics, ER staff, doctors, nurses and PSWs on 8 South and 8 west at the Hamilton General Hospital. To those who received felted acorn hearts, think of Ernie when you see them and know how much he appreciated all the chats and care you gave him. May they be a reminder of your wonderful contribution to making this world a better place. Special thanks to neighbours, Tracey Kelly, Lee and Sheila Horton, and Alan Wilson for always being there for Ernie and Cecilia. Heartfelt thanks to PSW, Sam Lowe, you were invaluable in providing Ernie with his personal care and support. To Joanne Davison, thank you for the transportation and support. Cremation has taken place, and keeping with Ernie's wishes there will be no service. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Hamilton General 8 South and 8 West would be appreciated.

Dear Cecelia, My brother Eric shared the sad news of Ernie passing away. Although an ocean now separates us, as I am living in France, and many years have gone by since I enjoyed your visits to my folks' home on Belvenia Road Burlington, I hold fond memories of our times together. The two of you have always been inspiring athletes, engaged community members and good friends of the family. I wish you and your family peace and loving memories of a man who, like you, I looked up to in my growing years as a teenager and young woman. Warm regards from Eastern France,

Travelling in the Jeep to the Project Dare ski race! Trying to keep up doing intervals at Bronte. Then four decades of friendship as Ernie, Cecelia and I visited. My Dad Patrick has so often expressed admiration for Ernie's commitment to his young ski team and all the support he gave us. Ernie was my first ski coach, an inspiration and a dear friend. Dear Cecelia, you are a champion too. I wish you peace and calm. I have some treasures from both of you in my home; and I treasure the memories of our friendship in my heart. God bless.

Cecelia, Really sorry to hear of Ernie's passing from Eric. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. I will never forget my first day of training with Ernie and the Halton ski team 42 years ago - I couldn't walk for days after I was so sore. That however was the start of a life long love for cross country skiing and the special life long friendships I made with Ernie and other members of the racing team. It was a special time in my life that I will cherish always and has helped shape who I am today. To this day I still model some of my own coaching techniques from what Ernie demonstrated to us at a young age. I know Ernie is now at peace in a place with blue bird sky, powder snow, perfect tracks on Rode Super Blue wax. I'll be thinking of you and Ernie on my next ski. Werner

Dear Cecelia,
We are sending our deepest sympathies to you and your family. I am so happy that we got to see you and Ernie a few years ago and to reminisce of the incredible XC ski adventures we had with you both. We thank you so much for those as you forever changed our lives as young kids from Burlington. I was one of many who you and Ernie spurred on to the highest level of, not only skiing, but in life in general. It is funny that today, in preparation for my 12 year-old daughter's ski race tomorrow, I had to find her an appropriate klister ski wax so I finally went to work. This was after many years of avoiding dealing with the many sticky layers plastic bags enveloping a myriad of klister tubes all stuck together as they had leaked out over decades since they were used in our hey days with you. You are an incredible force Cecelia and we will cherish you forever Ernie!
