Esther Sleep Obituary

April 22, 1937 - August 5, 2022

After seven months of compassionate care, Esther passed away peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital on August 5, 2022. Esther was born in Toronto but spent her childhood and youth in Ontario and Nova Scotia. She graduated with a BA from the University of Toronto, and Diploma from Christian Education from McMaster Divinity College. After working with the Baptist Women's Missionary Society in Hamilton, ON, she graduated with a Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree from McGill University and worked as a librarian in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and then at McMaster University. She retired from the James A. Gibson Library at Brock University in St. Catharines, ON. Esther travelled extensively around the world, and volunteered at Medical Ministries International in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Peru, and Bolivia, and as a librarian at the International Baptist Theology Seminary Library in Prague. She is predeceased by her parents Arthur and Alma Sleep, and her husband, Colin L. Farrer; and survived by her husband, Garnet Dishke. Esther will be sadly missed by her many friends, church, and extended family. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on August 16, 2022 at 1 p.m. at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street, (one stop light north of city hall) BURLINGTON, (905-632-3333) with a light lunch to follow after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, Brant, Halidmand, Norfolk, Hamilton Halton or St. Peter's Hospital, Hamilton.

Esther & I were librarian colleagues at McMaster University ( Hamilton) - 1969 + & continued as friends when she took up a position at Brock University . I have always admired her contributions to the librarian profession through her work in various associations, & her deep Christian faith. // - sincere condolences extended to Garnet Dishke & her many friends .

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. So sorry to learn of Esther“s passing. Remember many Christmas cards and summer visits from her. My mom, Lorraine, always enjoyed hearing from her on the phone and in a letter.
