Frances Jean Martin passed away on Friday, September 23, 2022, in Montreal, surrounded by loving family. Born in Montreal on May 16, 1940, she was the cherished daughter of Philip Martin and Georgette Laferrière. She graduated from St. Paul's Academy, Westmount, received her RN degree from Saint Michael's Hospital School of Nursing, Toronto, and her BSc in Nursing from McGill University. She lived in Burlington, ON, for many years and was employed at Hamilton Civic Hospitals where she first taught Maternity Nursing in the School of Nursing and, later in her career, devoted herself to patients receiving intensive cardiac care. She was a woman of keen intellect who was highly respected by her colleagues.
Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at age forty, Frances bravely faced the ravages of the disease. Eventually it caused her to retire from her professional life and to return to live near her family in Montreal.
Predeceased by her loving parents, Phil and Georgette, an infant brother, David, and a dear companion Douglas Boyd, MD, Frances leaves her beloved siblings and their spouses: Peter Martin and Hélène Lalonde, Patrick and Jane Martin, and Lucille Martin and Robert Duguay. Frances was devoted to her nephews and nieces and their families: Patrick (Neala Lee), Heidi (Marek Krepek), Jennifer (Graham Roff), Nicholas, Rachel (Michael Avenick), Annie Laurie (Lance Aug), Philip, and Robert. She took great pleasure in being a great-aunt to Phoebe, Pierce, Spencer, Simon, Sylvia, Abigail, and Finnegan. She also leaves many dear cousins and friends who enriched her life.
According to her wishes, a private graveside gathering will be held for her interment. If desired, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada (
