Frederick Hall Obituary

With profound sadness we announce the death of Dr. Fred Hall on Friday, August 19, 2022, at age 78. Loving husband of Sharyn for 50 years. Loved Dad of Matthew (Robin) and Elliott (Alice). Beloved Papa of Stella, Daniel and Ella Rose. Dearly missed by his sister Elizabeth (John) Clarke and brother George (Maggie). Fondly remembered by many nephews and nieces. Predeceased by his parents Albert and Marjorie (Irvine) Hall. Fred was born in Niagara-on-the-Lake and grew up in that historic town. He was a gifted musician, receiving university degrees from McGill (B.Mus., piano performance) and Toronto (MA and PH.D, musicology). Fred had a long, distinguished career at McMaster University as Chair of the Music Department, Associate Dean of Humanities (Studies) and Associate Vice-President (Academic). His major research interest was early Canadian music and with a team of music historians produced a 25-volume anthology of Canadian music. Remembered by his colleagues as the person to solve problems, often with a touch of mischievous humour. A lifelong Anglican, Fred held many volunteer positions with parishes and the Diocese of Niagara. He was honoured with the Order of Niagara and made a Lay Canon of the Cathedral. Many thanks to Dr. Lee Anne Coren for her care over the past several years. The memorial service will take place at Christ's Church Cathedral, 252 James Street North, Hamilton, Ontario on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. Visitation with the family 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Funeral Service 3 - 4:30 p.m. followed by the brief Inurnment of Ashes with the family in the Cathedral columbarium. Welcome reception after the service. The service will be available on livestream. Memorial donations may be made to Christ's Church Cathedral, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, or The Hall Family Bursary at McMaster University for a student enrolled in the Faculty of Humanities who demonstrates financial need. Dr. Hall was a fair, down-to-earth, decent man who was an excellent professor. As a Music Major in the late 70s, I had Dr. Hall for Music History in both Year 1 and 2 and also a special course in Canadian Music in Year 4. Dr. Hall had a great sense of humour and he taught us well. 10 years after I graduated, my sister also graduated from the Music program. At the graduation reception, I approached Dr. Hall and he called me by my name without skipping a beat. I am saddened to learn of his passing. My sincere condolenses - Mark Doble, B.Mus., Lindsay, Ontario.

One of my first courses I took as a mature student in the late 1980's was Music 1A6 with Drs. Sharyn and Fred Hall. What a wonderful introduction to university, having them as my profs! Fast forward about 30 years and while walking in Dundas one day, I recognized Dr. Fred Hall and when I mentioned I was a former student, he was very gracious. My husband and I bumped into him a few more times over the years, as recently as about a month ago, and he always stopped to chat with us. We were greatly saddened to hear of his passing.
With sincere condolences,

I was so very saddened to hear that Dr. Hall had passed. I was a music student at McMaster in the early '80s and had the privilege of having Dr. Hall as a professor. He was also chairing the department at the time. Not only was Dr. Hall knowledgeable, but he was also calm, caring, understanding, patient, kind, and an excellent, compassionate listener. I feel grateful to have known him-my condolences to his family.

My sincere condolences on Fred´s passing. I will remember working with Fred fondly as he kept us focused on our goals while laughing through fun and stress, but also Fred kept our team working like a close family aimed at being on time and on budget. He was a passionate, focused, and committed McMaster friend and leader.

Dear Sharyn, Elizabeth, George and families,
Please accept my sincere sympathy in the loss of
Fred. He had a sense of humour even in his youth. I look back on wonderful childhood years growing up in "old town" Niagara on the Lake. It was always so nice to meet Fred and catch up at reunions. He will be missed by all. I will keep you in my prayers.

Sending deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Hall. He was a wonderful professor at McMaster and I was lucky to learn so much about so many things -- especially Canadian music and Hugh Le Caine (early synthesizer inventor). Dr. Hall as a dedicated and fair professor. Most of all, he was very kind and a great listener. He invited our graduating class (of '86) to his and Sharyn's home to celebrate our graduation. I almost left McMaster to go to Ryerson but Dr. Hall convinced me to stay. I will always remember him. Condolences to his family.

My condolences. Fred was most definitely a favourite professor when I was a student at Mac - and not just because he'd take us all for the occasional pint!

Sending my love, and healing thoughts to your family. I worked with Fred at McMaster. I was a student leader just learng the ropes, and Fred was a kind, patient teacher who always took the time to listen to me and share his perspective. He shaped my approach to problem solving and taught me that humor can diffuse most situations. He was a wonderful man.

Dear Elizabeth and George.
My sincere sympathy go out to you at this sad time. I have such fond memories of bygone days playing a piano duet with Fred. One particular time at a Kiwanis festival I made a major mistake and have never forgot it.
