Fumiko Kanbara

1918 - 2021

January 16, 1918, Port Moody, B.C. - November 25, 2021, Hamilton, Ont.

Fumiko Kanbara, daughter of Sadaki and Fuki Shimoda, wife of Tameo Kanbara (2006), mother to Bryce (Lisa Dale) and Carlene (Bill Mercer), bachan to Rachel Mercer (Yehonatan Berick) and Akemi (Dirk Niewohner) and hii-bachan to Liam Tameo and Robin Walter Niewohner.
Fumiko passed away towards morning, peacefully in her sleep, reuniting with her parents, husband, brothers Robert Yukio, Haruo, Mitsugu, Minoru and sister Emiko. Missing her, are sister Kimiko (Ron Grant, 2008) and brother Frank Sunaho (Miyoko) and many nieces, nephews and their families. She was the gentle eldest daughter on whom fell a large role in guiding the family through the Japanese Canadian internment years, and their new beginnings in Hamilton. She was the strong, beloved centre of the family. Mom quietly brought joy to all her family, with wonderful cooking and baking, and especially with that beautiful smile. The family is deeply grateful to the PSWs from The Good Shepherd, CBI and VON, to Napalai, Martha, Fatima, Tracee, and to Dr. Audrey Chan for their crucial support over the years.
