March 16, 1934 in Montreal - October 3, 2021 in Hamilton
We are devastated and profoundly heartbroken by the sudden passing of our beloved father, Gerald "Bucky" Thomas Alphonsus Buchanan. A descendant of the Spicer papermaking family of England, Gerald is the great-grandson of Joshua Henry Spicer (Royal Templar of Temperance) and Mary Ann Rea, the grandson of Edith Spicer and William Buchanan and the son of John Henry Buchanan and Helen O'Connor. He is predeceased by his siblings John, Patricia, Gwendolyn, Barbara, Dorothy and Stevie. Gerald is survived by his wife Ada, sons John and Peter (Gina) and daughter Kelly Ann, as well as Gerald's four grandchildren (Children of Peter and Gina) Rachel, Olivia, Reuben and Jude and great-granddaughter baby Milo, and many nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Montreal, Gerald represented Canada at the British Empire Games in Vancouver in 1954 winning silver for Canada in Heavyweight Boxing, described at that time as the greatest amateur boxing match in history. He was a sportsman who also played football and rugby.
Amazingly creative and talented, Gerald had his own wrought iron business for which all three of his children also worked by his side. Gerald was the inspiration to his three children in their own careers: John in Accounting, Peter in Football in the CFL and in Real Estate - and Gerald's love of crossword puzzles is why his daughter Kelly Ann is a Crossword Constructor. His grandsons Reuben and Jude are presently pursuing their own careers in football.
The Buchanan Family would like to thank the ER and ICU nurses and doctors at Juravinski Hospital who kept Gerald comfortable. In the Atrium of the hospital, there is a wrought iron sculpture which Gerald designed and created for his thankfulness for care he received at Juravinski previously. We would also like to thank the Heart Function Clinic and the Thrombosis Clinic at Hamilton General Hospital, Paramedics and Fire in Hamilton, family doctor Dr. Alipio, as well as Jason and the staff at Limeridge Pharmacy for all of their years of care. We would especially like to thank Bayshore Home Care in Hamilton for the wonderful PSWs and Nurses who attended our home and cared for Gerald with compassion, professionalism and kindness.
We will forever remember you Daddy each day of our lives for your wonderful sense of humour and quick wit, there was never a dull moment. We will love you until the end of time and beyond and remember you always each and every single day forever and ever always.
A donation in Gerald's honour may be made to the Heart & Stroke foundation. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. Online condolences may be shared with the family at
