August 16, 1947 - January 22, 2023
Gerd Neumann passed away peacefully in his 76th year with his wife Dagmar and daughters Monica and Christina by his side. Born and raised in post-war West Berlin, Germany, Gerd came to Canada at age 20 'just to visit' chasing adventure, opportunity, and his girlfriend Dagmar who he reunited with after meeting in a Berlin disco. That one year 'visit' led to a 53 year marriage and a full, beautiful life in Canada. Employed at Dofasco for 39 years, Gerd retired from the Tin Mill department as a Mechanical Designer and enjoyed mentoring co-op students and teaching night school classes throughout his career. It wasn't uncommon to run into previous students and colleagues who remembered him with great affection. With his positive outlook and gentle, patient, calm and encouraging demeanor, Gerd found himself in mentoring roles in his many hobbies. Scuba diving, traveling, skiing, masters swimming, photography, car racing, sailing, cycling, and expedition motorcycling (seeking out the twisty roads!) were all hobbies he immersed himself in. Gerd will be greatly missed by his immediate family: Dagmar, Monica (Mike) and Christina, brother Dieter (Alicja), his extended family and his many friends who will all fondly remember his active and adventurous spirit. His grandchildren Aidan, Owen, Erika, and Heidi will always treasure their many bike rides and nature walks with Opa. Gerd's love of exploring, being active and self-sufficiency were instilled in his daughters and grandchildren alike. The many fix-it demonstrations and our kitchen table chats will be cherished forever. Gerd was hit hard this summer by mantle cell lymphoma. He took on this health challenge with the same disciplined determination and positive attitude he exhibited throughout his life, even engaging medical staff with his signature cheeky sense of humour until his very last day. Condolences can be shared at
www.canadiancremation.com and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre who showed immense kindness and care for Gerd. A private Celebration of Life gathering will be held with family and friends soon.
