Gilbert MAZZETTI Obituary

November 23, 1954 - January 31, 2022

It is with deep sadness that after a valiant battle with cancer Gilbert passed away surrounded by his loving family. He is now reunited with his father Antonio and his adoring Nonna Giulia.
Loving son of Gina; devoted husband of 41 years and highschool sweetheart of Fiammetta (nee Montesi), adoring father to Mark (Andrea) and Vanessa (Albert) Succi, doting nonno to Justin, Luca, Isabella, and Landon; cherished brother of Angela (Elio) Mongiardi, loving uncle of Alicia (Mike) Castiglione and Christopher (Deanna) Mongiardi and great uncle to Makayla, Jacob, Siena, Ariana, Max and Madeline.
Gilbert was born in Basto, Valle Castellana, Provincia di Teramo in Abbruzzo Italy. He was brought to Canada at the tender age of six months by his parents and his three-year old sister Angelarosa. They were called to Canada by their maternal grandmother Giulia. Nonna Giulia was always very dear to his heart as she helped raised the two siblings.
He attended Sherwood High school, an honours student and excelled at athletics which he continued to play well into his 40s when golf and fishing became his passions. He graduated from McMaster in 1977 and began his career at the Corporation of the City of Hamilton. He worked for over 30 years in Information Technology before retiring from City Hall.
Gilbert was a man of many talents. He enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together again. Fixing cars, tools, and being handy just came naturally to him. He was passionate about the outdoors fishing, golfing and boating.
Gilbert thrived on travelling to new places. He loved planning every moment to see everything he could possibly see wherever he was. Food was a big inspiration for his travel destinations. His favourite destination was Italy. He said Italy had everything. It was heaven on earth.
Above all, family, was Gilbert's focus. Spending time with family and going on vacations are some of our most cherished memories. Whether it was clearing brush for Fiammetta to build their garden of Eden or a tire swing and forest play area for Justin, Luca, Isabella, and Landon, he adored spending time with them. He especially loved taking them on bike rides and in the wagon to the edge of the mountain overlooking the Red Hill while counting different coloured vehicles.
A heartfelt thank you to his home nurse (Marian), the Palliative Care team at Bayshore, the numerous PSWs from CBI, St. Elizabeth PSWs for the night support, the Juravinski Cancer Center and Juravinski Hospital (a place he called his second home); Dr. Lalani, Dr. Zizzo and Staff, and Dr. Chris Mongiardi, who was always there to dig deeper, provide more support, and encouragement and be the strength and determination he needed, along with his family to courageously fight this terrible aggressive disease.

"I have done the best that I could, I have fought the good fight, I hope that I have left the world better than I found it. To my family: I am sorry that my life changed so much, and I can't spend the time I wanted with you. Remember the good times and the life we lived together. Think of me with a smile. During my difficult time I felt so much love from you. I know how giving you all are. Thank you for being with me. Your love has carried me this far. You are so precious to me and are in my heart" -G.M.
