1928 - 2023
Peacefully at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital in Burlington, on Saturday, February 18, 2023, Ian began his journey to God's many rooms to meet loved ones who arrived earlier. Predeceased by his beloved wife Doreen (nee Banks), and their parents Ruth and John Hall, and Alice and Burt Banks of Hamilton, Ontario. Survived by sons David and Kathryn of Bourton, Oxfordshire, England; Donald and April of Burlington and St. Catharines, Ontario; and grandson James (studying law at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia). Will be remembered by many loving family and close friends in Canada and the UK. We will miss his generosity and love. He was a consistent pillar of strength and support for his family and friends. Ian was a life-long member of St Paul's United Church in Hamilton. He was on many church boards: treasurer under Rev Ellis; President of the One O'Clock Club; and the architect of the church's former tennis court. In 1944 he enlisted as a reservist in the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry, and he represented the RHLI in many athletic and sports competitions. He enjoyed a long and successful career at Norton Company of Canada. On retirement he was hired by the Ministry of the Attorney General's Office as a court deputy sheriff at the Milton Court House. Ian supported several charities. He was a 32° Scottish Rite Mason, a member of Brant Lodge No.663, and a Shriner supporting the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Ian treasured family holidays in Muskoka, Scotland, England, and the U.S.A. Later he enjoyed several trips with Doreen to California and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Keen on football, he was a long-time season ticket holder of the Buffalo Bills and the Hamilton Tiger Cats. His family express their sincere gratitude to Drs Randy and Ryan Cross. Heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff on the palliative care ward 5 North Joseph Brant Hospital for their expert and compassionate care during his last days. Funeral Service will take place at Smith's Funeral Home, 485 Brant Street, Burlington, (905-632-333), on Friday, March 3, 2023, at 1 p.m., preceded by a short visitation at 12 noon. For those wishing to do so, donations can be made to St Paul's United Church Memorial Fund, 42 Tragina Ave. N., Hamilton, Ontario, L8H 5C5, (905-544-7417). Or, if desired, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. A Celebration of Life for Ian and Doreen will take place at a later date.
