Jan KOOPS

Passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at St. Joseph's Hospital with his family by his side. He was a devoted husband to his wife Theresia (nee Soede) for 67 years. Loving father of Fred (Sue), Annette (George), and Irene (Jack). Dear Opa to Jennifer, Melissa (Greg), Dawn (Jay), Christopher (Lindsay), Eskay (Cheryl), Stephen (Jenn), John (Kaitlyn), Laura (Adrian), Jason (Christine), and Andrew (Ashley). Jan was also Opa to his great grandchildren: Tabitha, Alexander, Samantha, Isaac, Rebecca, Cole, Mason, William, Grace, Preston, Damien, and Nolan. Jan was born in Hijken, Holland and came to Canada at the age of 21. He settled in Hamilton where Theresia and him built a life and family together and were very active in the local community. Jan was a long-term employee of Stelco where he pioneered implementing computers into the Chemical Lab. He was very involved in various organizations throughout his life. For many years he served on the Board of Directors of the Stelco Credit Union/First Ontario and was later appointed President where he held that role for several years. Jan was an active member and President of the Hamilton Holland Club as well.
He enjoyed and took pride in his woodworking and he was always working on a new project and known for his wonderful birdhouses that many of his family and friends will cherish.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Cremation Services were held. Memorial Visitation Tuesday, April 18, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until time of Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home (796 Upper Gage Ave. Hamilton, ON.)
